Yesterday, before...
When life was normal until...

The rains came first, drenching, drowning,
flooding all that was close to the sea as
the waters rose to heights never seen before.

Then, the sun became dark, first from an
eclipse with the moon and then...

Dust falling horrendously, becoming mud.
Windshields became blind as drivers
cautiously drove, peering from beyond
the window....squinting.  Faces covered
in kerchiefs, masks, towels.  Attempting
to stop the inhalation of the grey death
that fell in a blizzard.   But winter was
far away, or was it?   The temperature
had dropped 30 degrees over the past two
hours.   Yesterday, before the dust, beneath
a shining sun, a mild 80 degrees.   Birds
were singing until...

They sensed something was awry.   That
peril was near.  A hush fell over the trees
that evening.   Nothing could be heard
but the murmur of people that were
frightened.   Their eyes said everything.

The earth shuddered,   shook,   buildings
collapsed like dominoes.  Major cities
became firestorms.   Water was no longer
available, for the mud consumed the
moisture.   Sludge pumped slowly from
the nozzles of countless firehoses.

The odds.....bookies were taking odds
of it happening.  First, they predicted
100,000,000 to 1.....  Then Yesterday...
The odds suddenly dropped like a
boulder falling from a cliff.   Now,
today, the betting boards are empty.
People panicking, scrambling for
their lives.    Numbers, replaced
by letters....”God Be Merciful.”
And they still ran, leaving behind
their cars, for all of the highways
were blocked.   People screaming,
babies crying, dogs barking.   The
moans drowned out the sound.

At first it was slight, then became
more audible until a bright light
lit the darkened skies and suddenly
again,    the earth shook violently
once more.

Yesterday this happened.....Today
the temperature is a minus 65 degrees
Fahrenheit, slowly dropping.....The
waters have turned to ice.....Nothing
is moving, not a sound is heard.

What will tomorrow bring?

Noah, thanx for the warm words,  but no...
not about a hurricane....you have to read
it more closely, put the clues together and
you will find the answer....

Sounds to me like the fall of Pompeii. But whatever it is, it's one very powerful and emotional write.

I've got my blankie in hand, but not sure where to go.

I'm with Susan about it being a nuclear apocolypse (sp?)...

Hi Barry! Very powerful write here sir. Hmm! I think it has to be an asteroid (7 miles wide at least) hitting the earth. I see this image because of the eclipse of the moon line. An asteroid striking along the coast would cause a tidal wave 1000 feet high to sweep inland for hundreds of miles. This would bring the rains...followed by dust...for of course it would throw enough dust into the sky to block the rays of the sun for years. The earthquakes could be the aftershocks of such an E.L.E. (That is Extinction Level Event for those who don't read astronomy books.) (Wink wink!) Of course it could also be a huge volcanic eruption in some costal sea area. NewEnglandlazurlu could be correct with a guess of Pompeii. Such a volcanic event has happened in the past...and will happen again. Either way though the morrow would bring nothing but slow starvation and death. I love this poem Barry. Man you out did yourself with it. Well done my friend.

Anything can happen, anywhere, anytime...
for the Sun to disappear...now that...
would be worse

Nostramus's prediction of a galactic-sized asteroid hitting our planet and changing life as we know it, came to mind.

Whatever the scenario, this was one suspenseful read!!!

My blankie is wrapped firmly about me as I write this reply!

Mag, I know what this says to me...but for fear of sounding ignorant, I will keep my thoughts to myself until you reveal tomorrow to us.  Bud, you did one heckava job with this.

Oh yes,  I almost forgot. The junior class is studying Poe right now.  I am helping the students find pics of Poe for their PowerPoint presentations.  ...Can't help but think of you when I am helping them with their slides. (smiles)

Wonderful tale here my friend ...and me I don't care if I sound ignorant so ...  uh - a shift in the earth's axes, a polar shift, or the jet stream dropping to earth - I think all those could probably cause the results you write of, but whether they're what you have in mind... you're gonna keep us in suspense, aren't you???

Mucho ejoyed...
