a voice from the musicbox

0 posted 2003-09-22 08:29 PM

it will be the first night i sleep here without the hall light on,
blame it on a simple twist of fate.
the lightbulb burst just in time for the darkness to claim victory,
and man, i think that's great.
on my own now, just me and my twisted face,
stuck in the shape of a grin.
i've slapped myself silly just to feel like i fit in.
and i've learned so much since i left home,
i'm a whole new girl.
who'd have ever guessed a girl so blessed knew nothing of the real world.
and you ask how i've been, well life out here is grand.
it's not like a family or anything, and it's certainly not like the band.
i've learned so much, you'd be proud.
i've learned not to rush or follow the crowd,
no wait, you taught me that.
i've learned only entropy comes easy,
no...that was part of your late-night lecture.
i've learned there's a responsibility in being what i should.
you told me that one, but i never understood.
i've learned to wake up on the right side of the bed,
but only because you saw me ruin a morning so many times.
most of all, i've learned all i need to know has been said along the way.
you should know, i took my first steps in wisdom today.
i remember you said growing up's not easy, so let me help you.
and i was so damn worried about finding the perfect shoes.
you said be careful too many times to recall,
knowing full well i'd go on and fall. i am so small.
too much pride to say i need you.
you let it slide cause you already knew.
if i'm not mistaken i think you need me too.
let's not get ahead of ourselves though, i've still got a long way.
just thought you should know,
i took my first steps in wisdom today.

and even when everything was wrong, and we were mad at the world, it was still beautiful.

Smiling first at you,
then at the lines Serenity took
because those were the ones
I smiled at, too...

I remember this discovery...

Congratulations on your journey.

So many more steps to come.

This is the kind of letter home we always wish for but never get. Well done.

Lucky you! I am so jealous of you. My parents went to heaven when I was young. I remember slapping myself and saying "move on Julia" I have become a great parent to my two girls, Morgan and Emily and all by myself

Just keep putting one foot in front of the other...
You'll make it!
It's a whole new world out there waiting for you.
Excellent write!

Your "voice from the musicbox" speaks poetically and with love, appreciation, maturity, and wisdom. Your Mom taught you well--and this poem is sure to touch her heart--even I have tears in my eyes and you're not even my daughter!

A very touching write.
