the smog is thick in atlanta tonight, so for now i'll just have to wish on planes.
i've long grown weary of this fight between my falling angels and the rain.
i can't catch them both in this paper cup, and it's driving me insane.
i hope the seraphs will know enough to hold onto my wishing plane.
the gravity is too strong for them, the gravity is ruthless.
it won't stop pulling till everything's fallen, and the trying wind is useless.
except those man-made dreams that guard the sky, now guarding it in vain.
gravity is nothing to my carefree wishing planes.
though some may spite the flying machines for the destruction that they wrought,
it was the saddest day in sweet september we are taught.
the day a lady in copper could not even save.
the day that america climbed into its grave.
and the smoke, it choked my angels, and no saving rain could fall.
all because someone else's wishing plane breached america's padded wall.
but it wasn't a plane or soul who brought that skyscraper down.
gravity was just too strong for all of us that day.
and no matter how much me and don and james wish on our planes that it were some other way,
gravity grabbed itself a paintbrush and painted our skies gray.
but the planes-don't hate them because they're beautiful,
they're up there of us, by us, for us.
and we don't create them to be dutiful,
but to clear this earthly dust.
this dust that settles on each and every person
from the sky up through the ground,
and the dust that sits still on that spot in a busy new york town.
so all the smaller buildings, with their envy for the tall,
hid in shame and anger in the shadows, those cowards one and all.
the day the tallest one, the one whose glory never sleeps,
the day the highest king came crashing to the streets.
no one's wishing planes could have saved a soul that day.
for gravity's greatest triumph was in mankind's saddest way.
but i love planes like i'd love the stars, if i knew them half as well,
but i live here where nothing's clear, save hurry, buy and sell.
so for now i'll just have to thank my lucky planes that see me through the hours,
and for the careful watch they keep over all my ivory towers.
so i wish i may, i wish i might, on all the planes that climb the night,
staying loud and screaming bright-
for the sake of gravity, please stay in flight.

and even when everything was wrong, and we were mad at the world, it was still beautiful.

A very interesting and unique write. Wishing on airplanes--what a novel idea!
