Nail In My Hand
By: Noah Eaton
9/21/03

Both hands on the shovel
Wearing this contagious fever blister
No blood brother could take the heat
I must bear this burden within my liver
Aware that I've been delivered
I continue to follow the highway through the sand dunes
Looking for someone to tell me
What would Jesus do?

Shackles fastening my ankles
My throat parched of thirst
Save me while you still can, Lord
Strike a nail in my hand
Shackles fastening my ankles
My throat parched of thirst
Save me while you still can, Lord
Strike a nail in my hand...

And in this field of forlorn lambs
I'll stare deep into the vanishing point
Beyond this astigmatism
Looking for a quiet horizon through this void
I stand on hind legs again
With fourth-degree sunburns, an ataxic tongue
Listening for a jurisdiction
As this emphysema tears apart my lungs...

Shackles fastening my ankles
My throat parched of thirst
Save me while you still can, Lord
Strike a nail in my hand
Shackles fastening my ankles
My throat parched of thirst
Save me while you still can, Lord
Strike a nail in my hand...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

I
now
feel
my own,
temperate,
fragile and
precious, holy
blood, softly
dripping now
slowly from
my weak
body
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

I
now
feel
my own,
temperate,
fragile and
precious, holy
blood, softly
dripping now
slowly from
my weak
body
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

Now in your callous, gentle hands
Where I lie sleping
I will wake slowly in exhaustion
Drinking the salt on the Earth you cried
And I'll limp out into the distance
Among this sad parade
Knowing I must move on...

Shackles fastening my ankles
My throat parched of thirst
Save me while you still can, Lord
Strike a nail in my hand
Shackles fastening my ankles
My throat parched of thirst
Save me while you still can, Lord
Strike a nail in my hand...

Strike a nail in my hand
Only then can I rest
Free of this final burden...

I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sun set and I perceive

This was so touching and heartfelt my friend, even the angels in heaven are crying, Jesus is so honored by your sweet love and words! (beautiful painting)

This reads through like a sad, low-toned ballad.... which is very appropriate.  Your tone worked extremely well, and you kept it up from start to finish.  In particular, your use of imagery, and your perspective, really helped to pack this poem with emotion.

Excellent work, my friend... you should be proud of this.  I very much enjoyed reading this.

Wow, this was great. It reminds me of something I wrote once, not half as good though.
