Thoughts on the Day Before my Birthday

I feel the calling of change,
it rises like liquid under pressure
filling up with lessons coming back again,
now the face of it so familiar
I even think I know how it will end.

Grow me a place, I tell the core,
that is bigger please, so I can see
each life of me like fence along the road,
hammered, painted, and left to weather all alone.
Let me count the gates I opened, those I closed,
and the places where I left
my shoes between the slates
jumping into places too far to go.

I hear the silence because it is so loud
telling me I’m making the climb up hill.
I hear the echoes from my own voice through time
and I wonder like a child,
if on the other side of every mountain
there is another place to ride?

Knowing all the while that I’ll come around again
and see my footprints here the same
moving toward this circles end.
I’ll see the toss of head
and feel the eyes still storming
and maybe understand this time
the signs that say fair warning.

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Martie, these are such wonderful wise and beautiful thoughts coming straight from your heart, sweet friend, though we may not see all the gates we have went through and all the bridges we've crossed, take to heart you've already been through so many and every moment God is expanding your place and it will never stop growing as you deliver more flowers and have loved ones plant them deep in he Earth sowed with friendship! (kiss on cheek) God Bless You, sweet friend, I can't tell you exactly how blessed I am to have a special friend like you as so many of us here are, Happy Early Birthday, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Martie, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Martie, God this hit home:

Let me count the gates I opened, those I closed,
and the places where I left
my shoes between the slates
jumping into places too far to go.

yes, but if not for that jumping . . .
well I dont know if I would be better
of or not, all I know is it made me who I am right now

This is lovely
and kind of how I felt
after 31 passed . . .

Happy Birthday
to a fine poetess

I love the wonderful, positive, upbeat reflection of this piece.  It's been said before, I'll say it again - we're only getting better, Martie, and I'll continue saying that until we run out of birthdays, which isn't going to be anytime soon.

We've got a WHOLE LOT of LIVING to do!

Happy Birthday, Girl!

I have sincere admiration for someone who celebrates the anniversary of their being... especially when so much class and grace define the celebration.
This is beautiful, Martie... and I hope your birthday is a wonderful one!
Happy Birthday tomorrow... happy PIP anniversary today!

Some things change whether we want them to or not. That's true, but those are not the changes one should fear. The only changes that need concern us are those we can affect -- whether by changing when constancy is what we should give, or by refusing to change when the world needs us to be different.

I have a feeling that deep down, you know this and hold dear what you should, cast out what is hurtful, and let the rest flow like the tide.

Do I not guess you right in this?

You are a poet of surpassing beauty, by the way. I relish every word of yours, because they show true depth of spirit, and a heart that knows no boundaries but the ones it sets for itself. That's altogether admirable.

what a lovely introspective poem. i enjoyed this stanza best:

each life of me like fence along the road,
hammered, painted, and left to weather all alone.
Let me count the gates I opened, those I closed,
