Dust Devils dancing a jig among the scrub brush
as tumbleweeds rolled merrily across deserted
cotton fields.  A lone cowboy ramblin on the
CB, looking for a front door.  Wolf Man Jack
sleepin’ now, middle of the day as a scorchin
sun beats down on a Caddy cruisin the blacktop.

Dawn came prancing out of the distant hills
as the desert chill brought the heater on
high.   A fresh cup of Joe riding shotgun
among the candy wrappers and the latest
edition of some sordid magazine.

Next town a short distance of only 90
miles as billboards reminded of the one
gas station between west of Nowhere
and nothing else.  Doing a scant hundred
on a highway where only the timid
did 75 and the brave broke the sound
barrier.

A slight hangover from the Jack and
the thought of the empty seat.   No one
could possibly be hitchin’ this time of
day and this far from anywhere called
civilization.

A glint on the horizon catches my eye
as I wondered what could possibly
be ahead of me.  A car perhaps?
Maybe a sheriff too far from home
or a Bear with a big gas tank...

Closer now,   a car with it’s hood
up, steam clouding the air in wisps
which cried help in a big way.
Slowing, stopping beside a
Candy Apple Red ‘Vette, getting
the sight of my life of the southbound
side of northbound heaven.

Brushing the trash off the passenger
seat, kicking the bottle under the seat.
Combing the three hairs on the top.
Sprucing the sides, sniffing the armpits.
Phewwwww.

“Need a lift, next town is only about 40 miles.
I’m headed that way.”

Barry, in one of the replies I made to one of your poems, I went on about how versatile a writer I think you are. I should have added "raconteur" to the list!
