~
You say that you’ve got money, you drive a fancy car,
but what you have ain’t gonna’ tell what kind of man you are,
you wear a fancy wristwatch, it tells the time in France,
you wheel and deal in stocks and bonds and trade in high finance.

Your daughter goes to Harvard, your son’s in dental school,
you wave around a wad of bills like some misguided fool,
but truth be known, you’ve bit off more than you can ever chew,
and owe ‘bout everyone in town, the local bookie too.

You borrow from the bank, you put your house up for the note,
and say its no big deal, a second’s just a loan to float.
That money buys you time, but then, it never lasts for long,
And then one day you’re broke again, wonderin' what went wrong.

The Lexus, its just leased, but your red ‘vette was repossessed,
you tell the man you mailed the check, to that you will attest,
but really what you did was rob ol’ Peter to pay Paul,
you never tried to mail them those back payments after all.

The Joneses have a lot of things you evidently want,
their boy, valedictorian, their girl’s a debutante.
And Mrs. Jones, she doesn’t work, she stays at home all day,
her husband has a decent job, he makes director’s pay.

You didn’t go to college, and you never learned a trade,
and always try to figure how to get what others made
without the pain of earning it, you’ll never be legit,
the fact that you’re worth nothing doesn’t bother you a bit.

So now then, Harvard’s calling, seems tuition is now due,
poor brother, well, his dental school has asked for money too,
and now, Ma Bell is dunning you for three months worth of bills,
those finance companies are cruel, so cold, they give you chills.

They all confront you with the truth; you live beyond your means,
you much prefer the caviar to po’ folks’ rice and beans,
you want that great big outboard, when a simple boat would row,
and what you cannot fathom is you reap that which you sow.

That lyin' will catch up with you, they all will want their money,
and all your double talk and lies, well, that won’t cut it, honey.
You’ll soon be left out in the cold, and locked in a court battle,
the judge will say ‘I know your kind, your all big hat, no cattle.’

So restitution must be made, you're told to find a job,
but you still figure out a way, there’s others you can rob.
There’s lots of folks out there like you just itchin’ for a chance
to ease inside deep pockets, snakes are good at song and dance.

Becky! Bravo! This is such a cute poem. I really enjoy reading your stuff. It has a playfulness within the words that just keeps tugging the reader along until the last words has been played out. Keep it up!
