~

What is my wish, you ask me today?
I’ve only one wish that I’d gladly convey.
I wish I could find her, in any old place,
my mother who vanished without any trace.

I need a connection, some way to reflect,
was I a mistake that she had to reject?
Did she have some choices, did she feel some pain,
did she feel regret then, I beg you, explain

the process that happens when some mothers leave
their babies that love unconditionally?
Why would she abandon me, why walk away,
to never look back, did she have to betray

the purest of things that could enter this world,
so helpless, so wholesome, a need to be curled
up safe on her breast, where a good life can start,
a mold meant to shape an immaculate heart.

I never did know her, this woman, this mother,
But I would have loved her, I know, like no other.
Please grant me this one wish and find her for me,
perhaps she would love me if she could just see -

that I forgive her.

~ . ~

Note: I work with therapeutic foster children. This poem was written after a foster child and I had a long talk about her bio mother - and she wanted to know if I could find her and tell her she forgave her for abandoning her when she was a baby. I will never forget that little girl.

What a tear jerker...and you wrote the ache
of this child with tender grace and awesome
mercy on behalf of the child's attempt to
understand a reason she will never be given.

God bless you both.

I've had similar discussion with one or two of my FK's. I have one now that is going through this same question, and I think I am going to share this with "K" the next time she asks...
Great write.

Check out http://www.fosterparents.com I think it would be of interest to you.

Thank you all for your comments, this was a tough write for me, but it kept after me until I wrote it..

Ringo - I run a therapeutic foster care agency, fosterparent.com is quite popular with our foster parents. I don't think I could be a foster parent, that is the toughest job I can think of, and kudos to you for doing it. I may run the program, but the foster parents really do the work 24/7. Foster parents are a rare breed, and they are absolutely the salt of the earth.

Thank you again,

She must be an amazing little girl to be able to forgive her mother of this deed. Some adults can't find it in their hearts to forgive even something more simpler.Well penned my friend.
