Early the sea swept
Sand with ragged broom
Leaving this bit of shell
That strand of kelp
To mar pristine
As if she the char woman
Had hurried in her chore
Perhaps thinking of that man
Waiting somewhere for her charms

But the footprints were gone
And mine seemed profane
Yet I marched on as if it mattered not
I was intruding on this place
Coveted by the tide
Yet clinging to the lost lover land

Two days before
        We had shared this strand
With white skinned exposures
From far too young for skin
That tempted burn
And stare from wicked older eyes
Who remembered with covered sigh
The youthful days
         Of baseball terms
Describing indiscretions

There were the waves
To reflect sunlight into my own eyes
Blinding me
For the moment happy
                  Content

Later she returned
       That cleaning woman who reclaimed
The marred
               To sweep it again
As moonlight staggered across crests and cloud
I saw the swell of her
                            Take woman’s form liquid
With a motion that made me ache

For a simple touch of hand
                      Or understanding of lips
To brush my own

“The lady dances on wind and piles high
the clouds to veil naked the hearts of men.”

She still holds some part of me
         Captive to the sea

Captive, indeed.
Spellbound, as well.

When I read anything you have written..
   I never....ever...want it to end.

This piece is no exception.

I feel as though I have been lifted up and carried away...

Thank you for this Captain.

all morning Ive watched the reports with a heavy heart, knowing "she" will be reclaiming sacred beaches and washing away my footprints...lacking words to explain how it hurts to think of these exquisite shores, where I knew contentment like no other time in my life, could be taken...and then you post this ...

(thank you)

Lightning strikes and all you see is blue ... this is me missing you"

This is a wonderful write!  I enjoyed reading it so much and it brought the sea and the sand right to my door.

forgive me Ron...but I needed to read this one again...
Mark just called me from Chesapeake Bay...
this beautiful beach was the first place he took me this time last year,--the place that has been my muse of tides-- this is where I saw my first ocean sunrise...where the butterflies were on the beach...where I touched blue and finally knew its reasons....is already underwater...
my mothy heart hurts.

Certainly no man can write of the sea as
well unless they have the sea imprinted
in their minds and salt flowing effortlessly
through veins that feed the brine...
