fate threw us together
as two young lads
confined in a god-forsaken camp,
having to clear our military service

we talked a couple of times,
nothing intimate,
since we were too busy with
making sly digs at each other,
neglecting to unfold deeper layers

we grew older and parted

a few years back,
you jokingly declined to meet up
since i didn't have a girlfriend
"where's the incentive?", you asked

we grew older, buried by adulthood obligations
"Time-pressed" our harsh reality,
no time/energy/mood for anyone else

yet, we do still keep in touch
funny how a (short) email from you
imprints on my memory more than
thoughtful gestures bestowed by closer friends

the older, subdued me
is bewildered by such a bias

maybe i'm like Rose in Titanic,
poised to find an opportunity
to jump back into the sinking ship
so that i would finally get to know you

but no matter, cheers to our friendship anyway

Hi kaile...

I believe that friends are one of the most valuable things we can have. To treasure this friendship, even though you don't have much contact tells me that you must cherish your friends, no matter how far away or how much contact you have. A wonderful tribute to friendship.

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to have an old friend drop in on me....how precious that small dot of time was...one night to only partially "catch-up" on old time, new times....

Friends are so important, even if the ties that bind have to be stretched greatly over many miles for many years.  I know that hearing from that friend is always a treat, and does indeed stay on the mind for a while...

enjoyed..

hugs, g

God, this is beautiful kaile! And it is so comforting to see you back 'home' today.
I love the way this one flows from your heart, and hope this friend from childhood feels what I do about you...you are very  very special, someone whose friendship should be cherished and nurtured and held close to the heart.  Keep those flames of hope alive.

This wonderful write brought to my mind something rather uncanny.

When we were young teenagers, a close friend of mine moved 2,000 miles away. I was devastated. We wrote for awhile and then the letters gradually stopped.

Many years later (far more than I'd care to admit!) I was checking out Classmates and saw her name listed. I had just purchased my first computer and was new to the Net--and I was surfing it like you wouldn't believe.

Well, I emailed her and I started recounting  wonderful little anecdotes on her Mom--which, as it turned out, she had totally forgotten! She wrote back that her Mom, whom I had considered my "Second Mom", had just passed away and she was in the process of arranging her funeral.

Bottom line is this, she ended up using most of my email in her eulogy. In a way, I was present at my "Second Mom's" funeral and I hadn't seen her in over 20 years!

My friend and I drifted apart again, but it was fate that we were to reconnect for that moment in time.

Sorry for going on and on, but your poem really struck a strident chord.
