when he lost June in May
I knew he wouldn't stay
he'd be headin home
to see her fore too long
if you listen you can hear it
the wisdom in his spirit
one hundred million angels
sing his song

'My name's Johnny Cash' he'd say
as if folks didn't know it
and on his flat-top box he'd play
the guitar and the poet

and they sing his song
a hundred million strong
when he sings
the angels sing along

sometimes it makes me tremble
whenever I remember
the eight track tapes
we played in dad's Mustang
and when my dad lay dyin
the rebel was supplyin
and he clapped along
while Johnny Yuma sang

yeah, 'My name's Johnny Cash' he said
and let's not fail to mention
he went where angels feared to tread
when he played in San Quentin

and they sing his song
a hundred million
they sing him
well into the billions
the angels sing

the man

came
around

Reb, this is a beautiful tribute for a
great entertainer...the Man In Black.
I didn't think he would live for long after
his June died. I know that when one of my parents
passes away, the other will not long afterwards.
They are so close, one would be lost without the other.
This was a very good write, Reb Hawke. I loved
your rhyme in this one.
Hugs to you, friend

You certainly choked me up with this one, Dear Reb! You captured his essence and brought back many fine memories of him to me. He is now a member of that angelic choir!--and June was waiting for him with waiting arms.

God speed, Dear Johnny!
You will be missed!

Love & the Eternal Flame,
EA

I enjoyed reading your words LR, probably the best that I will have read and of anything heard or said by others.

If there could be an apt tribute
it would come from you.

I've been listening to the sounds
in my head these last 26 hours...

and yours, of course,
spoke for me.

Thank you, Reb.

Margherita;
Thank you for stopping by.  I appreciate your comments very much.

Martie;
Thank you -- it's saturated with the man... if you're not familiar with the song 'The Man Comes Around' from the CD of the same title (from whence the title of this originates) it's worth the investment -- and the DVD of his MTV Music Video award-winning movie is included... but... buy kleenex too...

Sunshine;
All day long I didn't even have any words -- then these... thank you

Maureen;
It's kind of you to say... thank you..

Becky;
Yes, he'll be missed but I don't begrudge him his passing -- he was a man who was ready for life or death... if you've heard him sing 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' to June -- you know...

Kacey;
Bye and bye...
the circle is complete -- but hearts are broken...thank you..

Earth Angel;
Thank you for bringing your thoughts to this somber memorial -- they are valued here.

Littlewink;
Yes -- it's me, I can rhyme -- but, not in poetry -- see, technically - this is a song...   and even though people may not think that me and country music go together -- just have to figure there's more to me than meets the eye -- besides -- Johnny was the original Rebel -- if you hang around long enough you can tell he was one of my earliest idols... Elvis may have been the King of Rock and Roll -- but Johnny was the Crown Prince of Cool.

Ethel;
I knew it too -- I'd just hoped he'd stay awhile -- he was starting to connect with a whole new generation -- he had a lot left to give and was just the person to do it.  And about the rhyme -- I just pretended for a minute that I could write...

Vicky;
Thanks -- I needed that -- I feel silly taking this so personally but it would be inhuman to not considering the prominent position he held in my esteem -- and the personal connection you could feel with him -- I remember the first time I met him back in 1980 at a pep rally for Jimmy Carter -- I was supposed to be covering the event but I wound up coming back with more pictures of Johnny than the President of the U.S.

I remember when Elvis died I felt it was a significant event -- but I didn't really understand the reaction of the fans because I ddin't feel connected in any way -- and I didn't live all that far away from Graceland either... but, I ramble

Meg;
Thank you -- I hope in time his real contribution to American culture will be comprehended -- but if there's an afterlife -- I doubt he'll be doing much resting... but I do wish him peace -- in the valley...

Dixie;
nuff said...

and huggsZzz to all...

Namaste

(big hugggssssssss) God Bless You, dearest friend, I respect Johnny Cash most of all not only because he was a great artist, but he was also a devoted Christian, and devoted to his loved ones and to the less fortunate! (wipes tears) Seldom do we see someone who truly understands Jesus and His Father today, but Johnny was one of those special people, and I am blessed I got to live to appreciate his wisdom in song, God Bless You, this is an excellent tribute, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Hawke, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Nice writing...I recently read where he said that when he was invited on the Grand Old Opery for the first time he wanted to dress a little different so he wore all black and it went over all right so he continued...now he's in heaven wearing all white...James

" the taste of love is sweet,
when hearts like ours meet"
god i hate country music, but those simple little lines without use of a dictioanry are so kick ass, aint they?

Michelle,
Yeah, kick ass is as good a way to describe JR Cash as any -- he was the original bad ass of the music business, the original rebel, he could be a conservative, religious, liberal, hippie all at once and be totally genuine about it.

June Carter wrote those words for him and they belonged in his mouth.

I couldn't ever really call Johnny 'country' music though.  He broke all the barriers and didn't believe in genre any more than I do.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Enchantress;
I thank you, and I know Johnny would too.  He was a man enourmously gracious to his fans.

James;
Thanks for your input -- very much.  There was very much more to the black though -- he was a fighter for social justice (and a huge influence on my views) and the black was his symbol of mourning for the downtrodden and oppressed.  He was much more than an artist.  Thanks again for stopping in -- it's appreciated.

Sue;
Yeah -- about 70 or 80 songs were playin in my head when I wrote it -- that was one of em surely.

Noah;
I have to agree with you.  He came closer to living his faith in the Jesus of Nazareth as I understood him than anybody else I can point to off the top of my head.  My favorite song was his last one -- 'The Man Comes Around' -- his approach to Revelations from the aspect of social justice is the way that I would tend to read it too -- instead of the way most folks do.  He said it was the most difficult of all his songs to write and I think it his best.  He just kept getting better.  And better.  I'm proud to say I loved the man.

'and he decides
who to free
and who to blame'

Amen and Amen

To honor anyone who touches so many is to show your gratitude for a life, Reb.  I cried when Walt Disney died, because he seemed as much a father to me as my own.  I cried when the people on the Challenger died, not only because of them all, but specifically one of them was a teacher, and I had a teacher who meant SO much to me, that I could feel along with her class, and the nation, the sense of their loss in this woman.

Don't ever feel silly Reb, for leaving your emotions here on the blue boards.  That is why you were gifted with poetry, and why we are gifted when we find poets who touch us, like you do.
