Listening to every heart

0 posted 2003-09-11 06:56 PM

Some would remember it
as a hell of a day, and
now, some 730 days later,
who hasn’t given a silent thought,
a nod to those gone,
and remembered with us?

Then, it was still a silent,
throat choking hold of breath, while
profiles in courage raised inner
flags and no matter what age,
those that had once served,
were ready to serve again…

I remember.

Then, it was unimaginable,
incomprehensible, as it played
out, over and over, then days into weeks,
over and over, and we were taught
how to tell if we were stressing
too much…

I remember.

Then, it was to plan quietly,
accordingly, to right a wrong, while
still the profiles of those who had served their Nation
talked of ways they could, should, would bring
the culprits down.

I remember.

In painstaking slow-motion mental osmosis,
a patriotic semblance became full blown,
stores sold out of vibrant colored flags
and throats continued to choke
on why we love our country so.

I remember.

Every step taken over the last 730 days, one by one,
we picked up our lives, then turned to pick up
others, trying to imagine what our lost ones
would do if they were here now, and we
were the ones gone on.

I remember.

730 nights ago, I prayed for their souls

Tonight, I pray for their souls, with
a new respect for those that have stepped
into their shoes…

Because I remember.

God Bless the USA.

beautiful tribute, sunshine.. i live in oklahoma city, and wasn't far from the blast of the Murrah building, and as a clinical social worker, i have counseled many of the first responders and survivors, it was a time i will never forget as long as i live. Thank you for this beautiful work, absolutely wonderful job.  Bless you.

I tried to NOT remember; but how could I forget the FEELINGS I had when the very air seemed to be removed that morning?
Well done, Karilea.
A memory forever etched upon the heart and mind.

Well done Sunshine. I am so sorry such a tragedy had to occur. What happened not only shook America, but people from around the world. We too felt the pain and anguish. We too wept tears of sorrow. We're all brothers/sisters under the sun. Lean on your Canadian cousin's shoulder and I'll give you a hug.
