~

Marietta Green, she made quite a scene
with her peter pan collar all starched and clean
and buttoned all the way up under her chin
as she sashayed in, dressed neat as a pin.

I eyed her then as she passed by my chair,
with her pleated plaid skirt and her blonde curly hair.
The boys watched in awe as she moved to her seat,
the queen of the fifth grade, all prim and petite.

Determined, I made it my job to find out
just what all the hullabaloo was about.
What was it she had that kept catching their eye,
but then my keen eye caught the reason why.

Those cateye glasses, that had to be it,
they were quite remarkable, I had to admit,
that had to be why the boys were so keen
on falling in love with Marietta Green.

I begged and I pleaded then, later that night,
I whined and I cried, what a pitiful sight.
I needed some glasses, they must be the key
To get all those cute boys to notice me.

The doctor said nothin’ was wrong with my eyes,
but I was persistent, so my sobs and cries
would get me some cateyes, all fancy and new
exactly like hers with tiny rhinestones too.

I walked in the class with my brand new glasses
and stood for a moment in front of the masses.
I died a slow death when they didn’t even see
the wondrous transformation that had come over me.

~~**~~

That day, those glasses went in the trash barrel,
an absolutely useless piece of apparel.
I’d have to grow breasts on my frame so lean
to compete with the likes of Marietta Green.

I hadn’t noticed Marietta’s two projections,
but finally decided, upon further inspection,
I was no match for the queen of the fifth grade,
Marietta's chest put mine in the shade.

Thank you, Marge and passing shadows - this is a wonderful site, I'm trying to get used to it. The reception has been most gratifying indeed.
