9/11 a term
that has never
sat well with me
condensed
it diminishes into catchphrase
a soundbite a t-shirt

is it apathy
or are our
attention spans such
that there's need
to be sold the memory
in order to keep it alive?

networks vie for attention
promising the best in
coverage and commentary
somber music backs
an inundation of footage

but i've no need or patience
for soundtracks,
slow motion captures,
and poor re-enactments
to relive and remember that day

engraved
in memory and heart
i learned
in horror and disbelief
the depth of evil
that lives in the hearts of men

and slowly
more importantly
i learned the beauty
that lives
within as well

if only for a moment
life meant more
and we were part of
something more than Self

in solemn
and dignified newscasts
being informed
meant more than being entertained

in acts of kindness
in the bravery of men and women
and in brotherhood
we were heartened

before showmanship and ratings
reared their ugly heads again

so I'll relive
in emotions and memories,
not glossy sentimentality,
that day and all it stands for

Indeed, Raffie.. Well said, and I agree. It's actually quite honorable seeing as how you're Canadian, that you wrote a piece exclamating the fact that it too, impacted upon your mind/heart.

Wow, Raffie.. you're so cool. *swoon*

no one will forget the horror of that day...inspite of sound bytes and condensed sensational we all saw the events for what they were...a tragic loss of lives..

believe in what your heart feels...

Thanks everybody for the kind responses. This wasn't easy to write, it's difficult touching on such an emotional subject without sentimentality especially when you're writing against sentimentalization. While I am Canadian, Toronto is just over an hour or so from the border. We've grown up watching ABC,CBS,NBC affiliates from NY state and I myself often listen to K-Rock NY in the mornings so we have a feel for the city. I won't go into what I felt that day for fear of sounding maudlin. What I will say, as mentioned in the poem. is that for at least a little while everything was treated with the dignity it deserved. But as the tension died down networks went back to their shlocky ways adding enough taglines, smarmy music and graphics too make me sick. I could never buy into it, I never agreed with the removal of WTC from movies, television and pictures, and I will never say 9/11, the date was September 11, 2001.
If i allow myself to watch anything at all regarding the events I'll watch 9/11 the documentary by brothers Jules and Gedeon Naudet and nothing else.
