Reaching, finding the delicate prize, a small
starfish lying among the sand.  Reminding her
of what was upon a night when breezes chilled
the skin as words chilled the heart.

Why, she asks?   Why all of these days?  Days
of countless lonely walks, the occasional hello.
The times when she knelt and drew hearts,
only to see them washed away as quickly as
they came.  Two hearts, now one.

Remembering the way he held her, his arm
around her, resting perfectly upon her hip.
Walking in time to each other as hips swayed
and lightly touched, sending a shiver through
her, even now as she imagines back to that
time.

Petals, He loves me....he loves me not...he...
He is not there, for if he were, she would
smile,   giggle as he attempted to catch each
petal she cast to the wind.  Jogging back to
her, breathless, placing a single petal upon
a closed lid, kissing her there....allowing
his lips to brush her cheek as he wandered
lower to her waiting lips..

Something inside her said that night would
be goodbye.  His orders in hand,   a tear in
his eye, the hurried kiss as the conductor
yelled “All Aboard” in a booming voice.

She stood there as the giant wheels strained
against the rail,   a wisp of steam obscuring
her sight.   Trying desperately to see him,
searching frantically through the misted
windows.

Finally, she knew where he was, for on one
window, drawn on the misted glass....two
hearts entwined, remaining so....even
after the startling knock on the door that
fateful eve, when memories walked the
beach once more and a single rose floated
out to sea in a bottle...for him.

Good grief, Barry...where is the hankey alert!!??  How poignant this is...like one of those movies with artistically sweet imagery and an ending that weeps for love.  Wonderfully done, dear man!

Barry, I am in tears. This is about as poignant and romantic and sad as a poem can get. Wow! You pulled out all the stops on this one.

Great, great write my friend! Love it so much and if it's okay, I'd like to keep it. Thank you.

Hugs and tears ... Marti

Oh my goodness, Barry, there really should have been a hanky-alert, or kleenex one!! I held it in, until I got to the last verse and then I couldn't. Goodness gracious!!

Hugs to you, my friend
