The foundation would soon be laid, construction had begun.
The excavator had been paid, his days work being done.
I checked the blueprints in my hand, a concientious guy,
so far, it all had gone as planned, then something caught my eye.

The evening sun that cast it's rays sidelong in fading light,
reflected off a thing which lay, revealed, in partial sight.
I climbed down to inspect the wall where I had seen its' glow,
there're those who say I took a fall, but, me I just don't know.

I'd swear what I found there that day cannot be gauged in worth.
Though some might think me daft I'd say that what had been un-earthed,
contained within its' crystal depths a clarity so pure,
away from it I should have lept, resisting its' allure.

But, with naievity I gazed into that sphere of glass.
A mystic link between the days of future and of past
did open unbelieving eyes, to empires rise and fall.
Though some might think it otherwise, it matters not at all.

I witnessed strange and wondrous things as if were there first hand.
Great joys and sorrows it did bring, almost more than could stand.
And still, I peered into it's core until I reached it's heart,
within each chamber I explored, another one did start.

And so, my life was changed that day, for better or for worse.
To those who'd ask I'd have to say, it's been more of a curse.
To know with utter certainty that everything must end,
becomes the seers' burden, I implore you this my friend.

Should you un-earth this object I've returned back to the ground,
avert your eyes with due respect, on that day what was found,
though some insist I made this up, "delusions" of a fall,
are proof enough, these hands once cupped, great Merlins' crystal ball.
