Never Roses

They never sent her roses
Never brought a flower,
Though they could;
Never sang to her
Nor heard the hopeful song
She sang within.
Oh, they did hear the silence
They’d created, called for songs
To fill it and required roses
Of her for themselves
When she had no more flowers
To give. But give she did,
Gave roses she created from
The substance of her spirit,
Gold of her love she gave,
The treasures of herself
That they lacked the eyes to see
Or tools to count, and squandered
Until she was empty, used,
Then simply left: no thanks,
No thought, no love.

And never roses.

There are those who give much more than they will ever recieve...and for those are many rewards in heaven. Here's hoping her streets are lined with roses

James...Some people give and some take and some can do both, but a relationship like the one in this poem is sad, and probably as much her fault as his.  Interesting and thougtful poem.

Now in this, I saw children
Leaving a person who had given her all
Behind in some vast storeroom
For the aged…

Very, very sad, indeed.

You are now officially on my "must read" list. *S* For the versatility you're showing is amazing... the incredible imagery of your first post, the cheeky playfulness of the frat boy... and now this sensitive, tender portrait of sadness.
I think this is absolutely beautiful... whether she's lover or mother, she's given petals through your pen. *S*

I forgot to add this to my library... and it's definitely a keeper! *S* Beautiful work!
