in the shadows

I am a pilgrim,
like the wretched
social chaff that followed the crusaders
into hell starving while believing
sanctuary and the miracle
of holy life beyond horizon's edge
would feed an everlasting fountain
of delight and ecstasy.
They perished where they fell while prayers
still stumbled from their lips,
they turned to dust and blew away,
too soon forgotten.

I am a thing, like a device
abandoned on some lost mechanic's trail,
a bit of history with others left
by travelers in haste to venture on,
dropped when application and usefulness
were gone with rusting shadows of
when purpose shaped precision,
once tools of use and value
to the needy and the skilled,
worn out and left to memories
too soon forgotten.

I am a fool and choose it willingly,
I see the lie while I embrace it,
my long lost soul adrift
for years maddened by its solitude,
laughs knowing I have chosen
the impossible as if it were dessert
served up for free
after the bones of life's last meal
are left for carrion
to feed upon,
to polish clean,
too soon forgotten.

The razor's edge is an uncomfortable and dangerous place to be--but you write well from that perspective.

exactly...
me, not you

How many of us 'see the lie' while we embrace it?
Well done ice...much enjoyed the read.

"into hell starving while believing
sanctuary and the miracle
of holy life beyond horizon's edge
would feed an everlasting fountain
of delight and ecstasy."

We all do the equivalent to this from time to time in life...

risk, trust and faith...none are perfect and when lost can cause extreme damage.

Got me thinking again, Icy!  Not fair with so little sleep...
