The Wallflower (from Open #4)

Clutching close my invitation
I enter with much trepidation.
I glance to where you're holding court...
Your laugh rings out, your friends cavort
With such glee.
I wonder why I came tonight -
Thoughts of arms holding me tight
Seem foolish even to this dreamer.
Your eyes are on that brazen schemer
Not on me.
I wish that I could get away
Before I have to hear you say
Your heart belongs to another.
I try to breathe, I almost smother
All alone.
But the dance continues as I cry
Whirls of color whisper by.
I gaze with longing at the door -
I must cross that endless floor
To get home.

Belle of the Ball (from Open #6)

Away across town, bright lights are glowing
She sits alone, but can’t avoid knowing
Her invitation wasn’t lost in the mail
She wants to be special - she’s obviously failed.
A bottle of scotch, the best she could find
Hasn’t helped the hurt that gnaws at her mind.
Another is dancing in her lover’s arms
And she’s here - sadly lacking in charms.
The tears drip down though she’s vowed not to weep
With a sob and a hiccup, she slips into sleep
For in her dreams, she’s the belle of the ball
Admired by many and accepted by all.
And no little slut could stand a chance
To interrupt this dream romance!
Entirely too soon the clock strikes midnight
Maybe just one more drink will make things all right.

Reversion to Rags (I’ll get it right eventually... maybe? *G*)

Confidence clothes me
And assurance
Floats freely, gently
Surrounding my ankles
In wisps and swirls
That twirl with grace
As I dance
Anticipation.

But I find my table
Is set for one
And the arms
I'd rushed to fill
Hold someone else.
She shimmers
In shining smug
Secure in knowing
She centers your universe
And I'm a distant satellite
Insignificant.

Gown of illusion vanishes
And shards of hope
Crash to the floor
As my happy dance
Shuffles to stunned stop.
Thankfully, no one notices
As deprived of dignity
I dash for door
Dressed in destroyed dreams
With train of tears.

Like me
They mean nothing.

And these are the very good examples
of why you reached 10,000 so effortlessly...

Thank you for sharing them again, suthern...

Well I got triple the pleasure with this click, Dear Belle of the Ball!

Congrats on 10,000---or is that 100,000!!!

Bring up some more of your golden oldies! They bear dusting off! I didn't start reading your poetic works until Open #22 when I joined.

EVENTUALLY you'll get it right? It's a heart-stopper now! Reversion has got to be one of the best Laura poems ever, and I wouldn't change a word of it.....unless there's a chance to change ALL the words.....

(big hugggssssssss) Oh my gosh, this is so heartbreakingly brilliant, sweet friend, I love how you linked two of your classics into a brand new installment, almost to show both the positive and negative film of the lindy-hop! (sigh) Here's angel hugs for you, sweet friend, I love this, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Suthern, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
