Never close enough

I recall that morning in my mind
as if, it were just yesterday.
You not sure, and I scared
to death of what being with
a man again could mean.

Breakfast you said, nothing more
the plan was to play it by ear.
Actually, there was no plan at all
just you and I learning each other
from opposite sides of a wooden
table for two.

You, casual in conversation
and I afraid to speak, yet
needing to tell you so much.
What if you heard my story,
and then decided that you
weren't ready for a girl like me?

The day wore on, and as it did
I noticed myself giving way to
a feeling that had long been gone
from my heart.

For the first time, I was relaxed,
and comfortable with a person,
I felt as though you were
a lifeline that had been thrown to
me by a stronger force.

You made me smile,
and laugh, and I was alive
inside, wanting for that
day to last forever.

You held my hand, and
told me about your life,
you looked at me as if
I held something in my eyes
worth seeing, and being around.

                ***

...that was four years ago,
in the Fall of the year, October
to be exact.

That day just spilled over into
thousands more that we have
shared our mornings, evenings,
and nights together.

I still have that reciept ya know,
because I am sentimental about
things like that,
and my new life started
after
we paid for breakfast
and left the restaurant.

...Breakfast in the morning you ask?
Absolutely,  I answer.
Wouldn't miss a date like that
for anything in the world.

I bet you're glad that you allowed yourself to take that first step into a new life. Thanks for sharing...Paul
