Never close enough

You seem to cast a shadow like none I've ever known
Before you my soul was here, after you it was gone.
Nothing was ever the same for me, after you captured my heart
All that remained was an empty person, with a world torn apart.

Your's was a game I'd played many times before
I should've known I'd lose, just so you could score.
Just a little of your time was all I'd ever win
For all the nights I cried to sleep grasping inner sin.

My assurance of myself was never strong enough for me to know
That I should've cast you out, and let your shadow go.
All the years gone by, and still I can recall, the ignorant, joyous
splendor of that line that made me fall.

Today is full of memory, tomorrow I'll move on
Reaping yesterday is all that's left, of a time
that's all but gone.
