They always told me,
That I'd never see thirty-five.
In June I turned fifty...
I guess that must mean I'm alive.

But all the gainsayers,
Are pushing up South Texas sod.
And kept their appointment,
With death, and their stand before God.

I'm not religious,
At least I try hard not to be...
But Someone's in charge...
As all but the fool, plainly see.

All the close calls, and near misses,
Have made me ask, "Why?
Why do You leave me?
When all of my friends had to die?"

I'll live ever day that I'm granted,
Like it was the last.
And not like some cowboys,
Who spend all their time in the past.

I guess everyone that I've met,
Has a philosophy.
I am no different,
I guess this is what I believe.

A man is successful-
If he has these things in his life
One dog, and a friend, to be there at the end-
And a woman he loves as his wife.

Well said John , you know I once read something that measured the success of a man and it had nothing to with accomplishment or success . . . it had to do with him, inside and what he loved and loved him back.
Very nice
