Confides and Confesses

Unique her
inescapable corner

Its centerpiece-
an intimidating,
grand oak desk,
which undoubtedly
took great pains
to navigate in to such
cramped quarters

Scents of old money,
chamomile, and lavender
potpourri wafted from
her haven in breeze
of my swift pass.

Occasionally,
I was summoned
to her den as she edited
work in my presence,
always in teacher’s
red, while extolling virtues
of proper proofreading.

Just as her hair,
never a strand left to chance.

Impressed with the press of
her A-line seam, never a crinkle,
nor wrinkle upon her ensemble
and few upon her face.
Her fifty plus years
graced her well.

Certainly, every detail clearly
enunciated her ancestors’
Mayflower voyage

As time passed,
my pages found less red,
giving us a chance to speak rather
than mince words

Within our writers’
conversations,
we found friendship

Confides and confesses,
soon left me no choice
than to repaint
Da Vinci’s canvass

Late afternoon tales of childhood
wrote her true story
as her words unfolded
upon my mind’s screen
in 30’s black and white

Born in dirt floor poverty,
Daddy drank his way
through the better part
of the week.
Sober Sunday, he
preached from the old
Southern Baptist pulpit

Mama passed when she
was nine, an
unforgivable
abandonment.

But in the
swelter of summer
Alabama,
she dreamed,
dreamed a soft, sweet
dream of cradling a
baby doll in her
thin, frail arms

Determined,
a poor little girl
transformed a
bleach bottle
and scrap of burlap into
her very own.

Tears filled her eyes over her
reading specs, once I thought to
be designer eyewear

A fast forward
spin brought
this story to her
days of newly wed,
when a little girl’s dream came
to fruition.

As other new brides
selected sheets and
lovely spreads for their
marriage beds,
she found herself
shopping for just one
adornment for their bedroom...

A doll,
her baby doll.

And in that one afternoon
of confides and confesses,
my view would never
see the same.

Well, you have bowled me over with this fine piece of mature writing! Pat yourself on the back and kiss the mirror for me!

This is definitely going into my personal treasure trove of collectable poetry!

Kudos, Patricia!

My goodness you are good.

I have this "thing" about smells, (smile?) I'm kidding, but I'm not--when someone describes smells to me I am halfway there.

That "scents of old money verse" was intense for me, because I still could smell things implied there too--coffee, leather, paper and ink. OH. Mimeograph-smell! That was it!
(grin...see how I get excited?)

and that how's that for an opener too:

"Unique her
inescapable corner"

Unique YOU.

There is so much here to enjoy. I think I'll save some for later.

This is wonderful Patricia. I'm keeping it, if ya don't mind.

Patricia, goodness this is astounding!
See, so many times we never even realize what may be going on with the other person, you know?  What an amazing glimpse into this woman and a heartfelt display of struggle
More than met indeed

Patricia, this is absolutely wonderful writing.
It was like I was sitting there with this woman
while she was telling me all these happenings
of her life. I'm keeping this too. I hope you don't mind.

Ethel
