This poem is dedicated to any learning disabled person who has been told that he/she can't succeed. Know that you are understood, and you can do absolutely anything you set your mind to. Special education Who are you to look at me, and try to tell me what I can be? Listen up all you people who have disliked me for who I am. I can do as well as anyone in school. For years people have said that I don’t have the skills. Or that I can’t deserve to enjoy life’s thrills, twists, turns, and hills. All I want you to do is just to listen to me. I will probably surprise you just wait and see. They thought that I wouldn’t speak and reach life’s highest peak. Take a minute to look and see. I did it all. It took me a while to be on the ball. Yes I can have it all. I can fly like a bird and soar in the sky. You don’t have to guess why. Anyone with determination and a loving heart. Can go through and conquer math, science and art. A person can only do what they set their mind to. I am intending to be a success. I have no doubt with nonetheless. Don’t look at me and try to tell me what I ought to be. I know what I can be and do. I am proud to be me. Look out world hear I come. I am number one. Yes I do believe not because of you but because I have power to be what I can be. I can do anything that I set my mind you. I don’t want to be you. I don’t want people to ask why are you so blue? Is it because you lost your shoe? I am loosing track. I am getting caught in the act. I am back and ready for action. I am waiting to show the world. That people with disabilities. Are no fools because we go to special schools. We are able to all the things that you do. Don’t judge us behind our backs. We are not a laugh track. We want to be friends with you. Because special kids need friends just like you. Don’t be afraid to come up and talk with us. We aren’t that different from you. You do know that it’s true. That we can learn from you and you can learn from us. So come on and sit with us on the bus. If you don’t you’ve be sorry. Because we are hear for a reason. We have lessons to learn form others. You can learn from us too. So sit down and stay a while. We will be here for a long time. We have a special message to share. We are needed to tell other about us. Then the world will start to accept us. When that happens we can be friends with people from around the world. You can do anything that you want to. All you have to do is be you. I can do it and have it all. I am on top on the ball. No I’m not a wound up doll. Who looks so small? And that people say that I won’t ever be tall at all. I can do that. Oh yes I can. Don’t tell me what I am to be in the “REAL world. When you don’t even know me. Why are you trying to judge me then? It doesn’t make any since. Then why do you judge me the way that you do. When you haven’t ever been in my shoes. I dare you to try to take 24 hrs of your time and be I & I’ll be you. I am the person who gets picked on each day. Not knowing what to say. When you grab me by me shirt. And call me names like I’m dirt. I am the autistic boy. I can see the things that you see. But I see them in a different light. Oh, no not another fight. My fingers are dancing on the keys. Turning in whichever way I please. Try to live a day in my shoes and see the world as I do. It is a cold cruel world out there. Yes it is. Don’t tell me that it’s not. I know from YEARS of torment and pain that the world that we live in, Is not such a pretty place? In which we can show our face. And not be in a disgrace in the whole human race when you are sent here for a reason. We are just like you. We like to do the things you do.  exactly...who has the right to tell anyone that they can't succeed...those people should be shipped off somewhere..can't stand people who put others down...If at first you don't succeed destroy all the evidence that you tried. |

Couldn't agree with you more! You have a wonderful insight into the world of the less advantaged. You show so much compassion and understanding of the negativity that they encounter along their paths in life! They can be some of the most affectionate and sweetest people I have ever met---and with huge, courageous hearts! It is amazing what can be accomplished when they believe in themselves and have the kind of loving support from people such as yourself!  Special  EA |

Wonderfully written. I've always held a special place in my heart for the mentally challenged. I volunteered my study halls in high school to spend time with them. To this day, the thing that makes me smile to think about it was the day that I taught Mike, a boy with Down's, to tie his shoes on his own! |

Thank you all thos have taken the time to respond this poem. I have written this poem from my own point of view. I am an L.D. student so I can relate to my own poem. I have been working with children with disabilites for the past two years and I simply love it. If I wasn't in school I would send all of my free time working with the wonderful children who bring me so much joy espcially Jimmy who has autisim.
