I dropped a buck fifty in Super Tokio
for a pack of Lotte Nectar gum.
A torn off top reveals wilted
late summer honeysuckle
seeping through the foil.

I flip the pack over, reading. I don't
understand Japanese, but I don't care
as I slide the pink stick in my mouth.
Chewing is a fat drop of nectar pulled from
popping the green cap off of a flower,
then drawing it's tongue through amber,
to drip at the end of the petal pipe.

A buck fifty later and I'm seven against
a chain link fence, tangled in vine and drunk
off of summer's wine. I inhale honeysuckle,
looking for the yellowest and fattest eyes. I suck
on those pipes, and grow dizzy as we whistle in
sugar--a dazed bee of a boy clinging to the fence
until after dark, and past suppertime.

Give what you have.

I don't know how I've missed your work--but that's not a mistake I'm likely to make again after reading THIS.

I loved the slow description and the inner journey--all tied into one simple act.

I'll be looking for you in the future, Minister Joe.

Enjoyed this ALOT.

Minister Joe...You took me with you from the first word, and I may have enjoyed it more than you did.

Thank you all very much!  As a boy I really did used to eat the nectar out of the honeysuckle in our backyard... it's definitely a summer memory.

This is a perfect example of why I have been missing you, Dear Matt! I do so enjoy your descriptive experiential poetry! Your trip down memory lane just took me down one of my own. I used to suck the nectar out of flowers as well! Tedious but rewarding! lol

Lovin' hugs 'n smiles,
Linda
