Listening to every heart

Bicker, Bicker

Ramblings of a mind
forming effervesce in sudden verve,
bubbling reminders
of what once was….

Mom and Dad, looking back at me
from a photo in the mid ‘80’s
smiling their 50’s something
early love, which was still

lingering

just as the thoughts of you, Sissie
and I, still standing in small-fry stance,
all of us being
too long-legged, in too-soon-filled
clothes of yesterday

sibling bickering

“who’s going to clean the table,
wash the dishes, dry and put away…”

and no one had looked at the schedule
posted
right there…
and our pencil-logged heights grouped
right over... there...

but if you were caught
trying to catch
a glimpse of that ol’ black and white TV,
then whomever was on dish duty
was sure
to get a douse of cold water over their
previously hot water rinsed dishes…
and someone would catch….

heck that we weren’t born closer

and you [the one that was on
dry detail] would really
have to dry them now…

Then,

if a voice came from the living room,
remember?, the one that said we’d ALL
be in trouble if we didn’t all
“get along”...

that’s when the singing would start.

Were we loud?  Oh surely, NO, but
surely so,
Home, home on the range...

and which of us would sing off key,
just to make sure the folks knew
that even “off key”
we were “getting along…”

birth dates separated us by time
and we grew apart, in some ways, as
siblings do…finding our own ways,
then finding our way home again

because didn’t mother always say

“you only have each other…”

and weren’t those
her wisest words?

Then daddy said, or at least, I heard…
“Take care of each other…”

Bicker, bicker...

we heard it but we figured
the folks would always
step in…

we loved them, each
in our own ways...

and then they were gone...

now, in bicker bicker
memories, I hear love that
wandered between us...

and I love you, still, and always…

it’s August, and the cornflowers start
to die, their time is gone…

I miss them, you…

but our time will come again
if not now
then…later...

and I will not stop wondering
where it went…

Wow, kleenex is right.....think you nailed this one right into a universal theme...certainly one for me. Think I'll e-mail my sisters, maybe send 'em some of my latest poetry.....yep....

Lovely. The one I miss with painful longing is my sis. Over the years my sis and I become close, very dear close friends. Thousand of miles separated us and over the years we talked and talked over the phone and became very close. I miss her with a passion. She had a way of listening and hearing your pain, but never telling you what to do. The laughter,oh my. What laughter till our eyes filled with tears from laughing so hard.
Good one.

Karilea

This makes me miss a sister that I never had, heck, it even makes me miss my brother.  Thank you for this treasure!

You knew this one would get to me, Karilea.  Those two girls of mine, bickering last night.  But when they lie on the comforter in front of the TV and the Macy (age 4) puts her head on Sissie's tummy (Chelsea, age 12) and they hug and giggle lil' girl giggles...well, you know all is right with the world.

Loved this!

Definitely a hanky alert. *S*

My sister and I used to bicker so incessantly that an acquaintance of my Dad noted "they must be sisters... they're certainly NOT friends." *S*

But the age difference that was so immense in childhood is nothing now... and she's my best female friend... I literally wouldn't be alive without her... and now we're reminding HER kids the things we (and you *S*) were told so often... get along... all the while knowing it can't be forced, but comes in its own time. * S*

A lovely heart-tug... I thank you! *S*

Karilea -
you struck a chord here
this is awesome & very touching

moving is a good word
I think I'll call my family soon
after this gentle reminder
& walk down memorie lane...
left me tearful

Thank You - DQ
