The heat and toil of the day is done,
Running it's course with the setting sun.
Gaunt, dead trees and branches bare
Fill a landscape of despair.

A tiny cry, a babe is born,
But will he live to see the dawn?
His mother died while giving birth;
Was this all her life was worth?

His father alongside him lies,
No picture of hope lights his eyes;
Only dust and dirt and flies
And the torment of another sunrise.

Tiny hands clasp at the air
Searching for love which he can share.
But not a soul around can move;
No loving hand his brow to soothe.

Child of Africa, born to die,
Let the whole world hear your cry.
Stir their hearts and souls tonight
So that hope dawns with tomorrow's light.

I really liked your poem.  The rhyming, syllables, and feeling just gently floated between each set of four lines, and collectively pausing between each set of four.  The message it sent is a truth too far known.  Thank you for this write.

Amen to this,
Child of Africa, born to die,
Let the whole world hear your cry.
Stir their hearts and souls tonight
So that hope dawns with tomorrow's light.

Well done.

some realities are more comfortably hidden from view...this is a poignant reminder of others' painful, hopeless existence.

High time the world takes responsibility for "all" its children. Great message!

Your words were so heartfelt and brought tears to my eyes.  I sponsor a child in Tanzania and feel that if I can make even the slightest bit of difference then it is all worthwhile.

Take care......Sue
