Fair Query

Fair’s summer time
No longer holds summer smells
And those smiles
That we knew ~ for it’s
Too sanitized, rides priced higher than
A Ferris Wheel, and by George,
I miss the freedoms
Of my day…

Where games and carnie rides
Were ten to a dollar
When laughter sounded
Like an echo in hollers

Oh my God…where did it go?

Down the road
PRB Rodeo…

But what the professionals
Have not forgot
Is to give a prayer
To God and our lot
And the cowboys kneeled
When their prayer was said,
My throat caught, closed,
’Round the words in my head…

“That God bless our Country,
Our Men in the Field
Let fear not destroy
The Futures we Yield
Bless our lives, for we know
That it is our truth,
That forever should Wave
The Red, White and Blue…”

Then the cowboys gave
Their hearts and their souls
To seek just eight seconds
Their only goal

To seek the flash
Of a goal to its end
Nor bust a lung,
But a message to send…

That there is hope
When one follows desire
As their bull bucked
Sending them higher…

And for a moment when
The feeling comes true
While spirits
And Fair’s time seeks
A minute’s renew
For just one second, my brief life
Saw more than one dream
In the throw of a hat
And a cowboy’s sweet gleam…

And I wondered,
Could it come back?
The sounds of laughter,
And kids at my back,
Where spirits are free at a
Summer’s sweet Fair
And voices are clear
In the soft summer air.

I would love to answer your final question, Karilea...but alas, I have no answer.  I think perhaps (though not sure) that youth's memory will always remain sweeter than this day's reality.

I love so much about this...

The good old days.  Thanks for the memory, we had our fair just last week.  It is not like it use to be, I guess when your a child it is more magical!  Wonderful!

Oh yes...this took me there.  Thank you...

Oh Karilea, this brought me back to when I was maybe eight years old.  My dad took us to a rodeo, God I loved it and the way you write of the attitude then, is just beautiful.   Thank you for the memory . . .

How did I miss this one?
Perhaps I was on vacation?
Yes..perhaps..
Love this as I did the rodeos of old.
(speaking of old..when I first glimpsed at this I thought the title was Fairy Queen!!
So much for the eyesight.)

I never could figure out why a guy would want to ride a cow, just can't see a percentage in it. But if it would induce othewise sensible ladies to write poems about me, I might be willing to give it a try!

Karilea

You took me there...and touched me with the cowboy's prayer.
