It was the song of finches
that reminded me of how
on rainy days we would chatter
as in flit from thought
to feel
we spread our wings
and learned to fly

You told me then
you were ugly
inside from things
you would not speak to

I smiled
knowing ugly all too well
and tossed seeds to the wind
hoping what was not eaten
by passing finch or sparrow
might grown into something
we could share

Now...
