Hunting Bunnies

That’s how I am,
though I don't hunt now.
I’m ten in this one,
out hunting rabbits
or getting ready to,
hot sun blasting down
and all the bugs singing
dream songs in the weeds,
freed by drought from
the local amphibians
and even Wilhoit’s beagle.

I’d just clambered over
the fence back of the
Scott place, didn’t know
the farmer, but I figured
I could hunt his field,
that’s how I am.
I was twenty steps in
and looking for those
innocent round bunny eyes,
mostly all you see of them
except the tail bouncing
if they panic and go racing
for their safe little holes,
but they wouldn't run today.
Today was for hunting, while
the flat yellow grass
lay flashing like sparklers,
hot like sparkler sticks,
and the blue jays scattered
toward the woods like
they knew what was coming.

I heard the BB shot
before the shotgun,
skinning through the weeds
and twanging the wire fence,
didn’t hear the farmer
yelling at all, not sure
he did more than open
his mouth and wave an arm
before he jacked another
shell into the chamber.
Supposed to run, I guess,
but what I did was,
keep right on for a few steps
while he levelled the twelve-gauge
in my direction, then
I swung that bolt action
twenty-two around
and shot back. Aimed wide,
sure thing, but close
enough he’d hear that
bullet whip the bushes.
He ran, I kept walking
all the way over to
Davidson’s woods,
went home another way.
That’s how I am.

And how you are is pretty special. *S*

the flat yellow grass
lay flashing like sparklers,
hot like sparkler sticks,

As usual, you paint a word picture that has us right THERE with you... only seeing more vividly than jaded eyes would usually see. *S* And yes... I couldn't avoid chuckling as the shooter went scooting. *G*

This reminds me of my own hunting experiences... I was death to any tin can that dared line up in front of my 22/410 over and under... but Daddy gave up on me as a deer hunter after he found me feeding my breakfast to a squirrel instead of even looking for antlers... my gun was yards away. *G*

I enjoyed this so very much... *S*

Very much enjoyed the read Ed!
You are quite the storyteller ..and a great one at that.
Fantastic imagery took me right there.
Good stuff!

Of course I was never a very ardent hunter -- always had a feeling that my friends who were had something to prove with it, and I never understood what it might be.

All but one rabbit that I ever killed got cooked for supper, and that one would have been except that my dad said he thought it might have rabbit fever.

I'd usually use a pistol instead of a rifle though -- good grief, at 15-20 yards it's like fishing with hand grenades....

Loved the visuals in this...could hear those summer bugs, smell the heat of the grass...lovely how you did that...and, I'm glad the bunny you might have found that day got away...and that you did too.  A wonderful story of boyhood memories..thanks for it.

Actually I enjoyed this bit of reminiscing, and please pass me that can of bug spray for I can hear them buzzing near me ... *SLAP* ... ouch.

Great writing.....!

Good one. When you go bunnie hunting again come get a few of my little critters. They keep eating off my fresh rose leaves.

Hi Toe -- It's open season on those delectible fuzz-tails all the time.....

So you don't need any licence, but a bit of license is VERY useful!

Yanno?...I've never been much of a hunter...I've hunted them skeet before...and I've found them to be quite "chalkie" and tasteless....no matter whether fried or baked or on the grill?

Ratleader, this was an awesome read for sure. You wrote vividly. I wasn't going to read it due to the title, but I just had to. I love bunnies, and I know for a fact that they can cry.....loudly and it makes your blood run cold. Still...a great write. Chris

Yum, skeets....like 'em better than snipes, especially when they're dipped in batter and deep fried. Dentist doesn't like me eatin' 'em though, even after I told him they're good for removing plaque...he said I should use dog biscuits for that, but they blow all to smithereens when you shoot 'em...

"that's how I am"
love this pic you painted, and the line repeated, gives even greater insight
