I am lightening;
you are fire.
We could burn
through all of life's desires;
build a hedonistic life,
free like lava rivers
slicing
through everybody else's hapless wilderness.
I am drawn to the destructive arts,
walking fearless
through the lifetime I've spent honing them,
and I am skilled at these
beyond your private nightmares'
best beliefs;
yet I'd have to learn,
again,
that it is possible in theory
to touch another gently,
without malice or defense.
I have trouble
being close to those I like,
and those I love
I hide away from them,
the vaguest clue of sentiment,
of soul's value.
I am a coward I suppose,
but I know my own history.
It isn't safe
to be too close to me,
and I don't always know the reason why;
I only know I will not
cry another bitter tear
for losing someone dear to me;
it would be easier if I could die
from grief,
but that's a wistful fairy tale,
one of childhood's beliefs.
I know I am not the only one
to love what death has taken
through its whimsies or its plans;
loss is part of life the godlings say
it's in his grand design,
but that old anodyne won't work on me.
One day it just became too easy
to see through into the other side,
and I could no longer swallow
being lied to even by myself.
I am lightening,
you are fire,
either one
can call the other to its heart's desire;
I ask only that you let me rest
in peace a little while.
I have wounds to heal,
dead to grieve,
and tears I will not cry.

WOW! I read this, and so many things came to mind. Sometimes we set ourselves up for heartache.

"It isn't safe
to be too close to me,
and I don't always know the reason why;
I only know I will not
cry another bitter tear
for losing someone dear to me;"

"It isn't safe to be with me"...That's not fair..that's a decision the other person should be able to make. That's so unfair to them. Arms length feels like rejection to some of us, or like we aren't good enough for that persons company. And, if you don't "believe in" something it can lead to feeling hopelessness. Oops...Sorry, did it again. I'll shut up, but it sure seems you just need someone to talk to. Sorry Icebox, I think i've said too much. But this makes me want to cry. :'(

liked the read a lot, should get people to think on how open they can be to others and how to be truthful to themselves

without malice or defense.

Fear, not hate, is the opposite of love, and love is the release of all fear....

And this:::::

I am lightening,
you are fire,
either one
can call the other to its heart's desire;
I ask only that you let me rest
in peace a little while.
I have wounds to heal,
dead to grieve,
and tears I will not cry.

....is one of the strongest poetic statements I have read in a long time -- here, or anywhere else.

===============================

sometimes the mirrors found in poetry can be
striking...I related much to the feelings of this one...I spent a long time closed off not wanting to get attached after losing several key people in my life..but somewhere a long the line I found it was easier(for me)...or perhaps more natural to feel love again, than it was to work so hard at staying numb.
Your words are powerful and honest poet sir,
thank you for sharing them.

"How could I stand here with you and not be moved by you."

One of the most profound writes in a long while in here...amazing...simply amazing..
and I can relate on many levels.

Extremely well done!

I thoroughly agree with my sister Enchantress, this is an "amazing" write. One I will cherish as it is going directly into my library. Thankyou for sharing this. Chris

Yes, depth and honesty, and a hard look at yourself...I still say love is worth the hurt it can bring.  Thank you for the opening of yourself in this poem...considering the poem's message, it is alot.  Peace to you, my friend...I am touched (almost beyond words, *smile*) by this poem.

This is one of the most powerful poems I've read... the reader can't help applying your lines to their life... even knowing that the portrait you paint is intensely personal.

This is excellent, icebox!

You surely know by now that you are an amazing writer.  Perhaps it's time to know that you are too an amazing person and one who has been granted more than the gift of words.

SharaRose ~ You are right, I am not fair.  Thank you for your thoughts and words.  I appreciate it.

ecrivan ~ Always truth to self!

Ratleader ~ Yes, love includes the release of all fear. ...but then there is the knowing the past and what some futures hold from which I can't escape.  Thank you for reading my poem and for your thoughts.

Janet Marie ~ Maybe I have practiced more, but I find numb to be fairly easy to manage.  To feel nothing takes more effort.  Thank you for your thoughts.

Seymour Tabin ~ Thank you for reading and for taking time to tell me.

Enchantress ~ I am glad I could bring you a smile; your works have given me many things.

Nightshade ~ You are welcome.  I am glad you enjoyed it.

Earth Angel ~ The older I get, the less predictable do I find my own tears.  I find that I laugh and cry at times most people find are inappropriate.  Thank you for you thoughts.

Martie ~ My dear friend, thank you.

suthern ~ It shocked me some years ago to find that I had lost the power of kindness and the skills of being gentle.  It was as if I had spoken a second language for so long that I had lost my native language.  To say the least, it was an epiphany.  Thank you for reading my poem and for your comments.

Munda ~ Thank you for reading and for telling me; I appreciate it.

Honeybunch ~ Helen, you are a wise person and have been a friend to me, but I am merely a traveler trying to stay on the Path.  Thank you for reading my poem and for your thoughts.

Wow powerful and painful write. "It isn't safe to be too close to me". Have you walked the same paths as me? It sounds like it and sometimes I would add, It isn't safe to get too close to me.

ah icebox, this, from one who can relate so well to my writings, we are a bit alike

those tears you'll never cry, the not being safe too close...yes...but who is more the loser then?

Oh how glad I am that I saved this to the last, and I did sot purposely.  I find I feel much safer in the numb zone, but that it takes a lot of energy to stay there.  Oh well no one ever said that life would be fair now did they?  Excellent piece, and certainly makes for a lot of self-exploration let me tell you.

I don't want to know where I am going, it will ruin my journey.
