Drips, November clouds, all gray
On sullen trees shook raiment bare.
Last leaves fall like brownish tears
Ice-flecked rain drops, frigid air.
Cold and wet, and wet and cold,
A beat, that warns, that winter's near.

A change of rule in Hazel found,
That thinks it spring on mountain sides
Where yellow ribbon, blossoms bear
(a match, in hue of gold in bees)
The last to buzz, before snow flies.

Sent, are blue-cold, fan-rays down
From cloud gray skies, to light the path
Where dry leaves scratch, a rustle sound
Along the trail, where pig-nuts
Scatter marbles on the ground.
*
Is now that some must stay
(without reprive) and leavers
On long journeys trust, they know
When leaves once green in summer,past
Are struck by frost and frozen brown,
And show beneath, our passing feet
In colors of burnt-umber on the ground;
That these are signs, that they must go...

Falling down are ancient sounds
Of wanderlust, played high and loud
In chortle quacks, and whistles blown
Through wing tip, rapid beats;
That move them quickly, southward bound...
*
