Soon they will erupt,
and break the skin
of their brown bellied mother that shelters them,
they will dance long beneath a harvest moon
remaining one of the last of summers blooms,
they will smile to me again,
goofy yellow faces on roadsides,
garden variety crowd pleasers
towering high on the ladder of the plant kingdom,
weighing my arms heavily with the farmers market
they will again play tug of war on my heart,
as if i had any more control over their birth
than that of my own seedlings,
as i both swelled with life
and pitied my babys entrance into this absurd world
worrying of their future
way before their first steps,
they surround me like blaring trumpets,
mellow yellow they will absorb my spirit
when i lay down to dust again,
i celebrate their arrival
and dread their message once they've shriveled amid
the other produce that makes the birds swoop down,
o the flowers of the sun, flores del sol..........
the climax of an ascending season..................

Michele...this is such a beautiful and touching write.
This reached in and tugged.
Hugs to you,

Michele, you know at first I thought of daisies here . . . you and daisies always but every summer I plant sunflowers - amybe 10 - 15 of them and this reminded me of that exactly and God it is July already -
Ahhh . . . this was bittersweet indeed
You are amazing . . .

Ummm, your girlielocks are showing, and you are just as pretty as a picture,
even when you're engaging in that dreaded tug of war!

I too thought of sunflowers in the beginning
also the flowered hill country of Texas

although pictures don't do it justice

and my dear Goddess - I'm sure your children are a blessing both to you & everyone they meet

I truly enjoyed this one
& as always I look forward to more

WOW.

Your writing just consumes,
in a good way

To the library it goes!
