I’m driving today with eyes on the road
pretending I know the right way to go
but a corner appears, I turn, I am lost,
and I slow to debate my profit and loss.

I asked for a torch, legs to run the last lap,
and the used once before remains of a map,
not the moon and the stars, a call from afar,
or a stop/starting heart like an old motorcar.

I’m driving today with eyes on the road
overfilled with the burdens of soul.
If only, if only, I packed lightly the trunk
and eliminated love as unnecessary junk.

And now am I blessed, cursed, or discarded
or merely regarded as the dearly departed
still breathing the air of forward/reverse
in the perverse atmosphere of this universe?

In my haste to arrive I’m always too late,
from youth to old age there’s always heartache,
but each mountain, hill, dale, slows me enough
to appreciate love … and get through the rough!

Your poetry always has a message that speaks to me...and I thank you for that.
