Never close enough

When he used to smile, it was a marvelous smile
I remember it now, if only in my dreams
He was happy in those days, and then something changed
something placed that frown on his strong face
and his happiness was erased

He won't tell me about it, he has too much pride for that
he needs to be strong in my eyes
I miss the happy him
The him that I knew until he went into another direction
and started covering his lies.

He talks, but his words seem so empty to my ears
His joy is a cloak for his despair
His mask is wearing thin,
his pain is leaking from the actions in his life
When did this all begin?

He seems so mysterious to me now
not like when I was younger
then, I knew his story and what he was about
Now, I'm on the outside looking in
I grew up, and moved out

I ache for his heart
and the half-truths that have caught him
His life has circled back, and now he's on the run
His light continues to dim

He's there, and I'm here
each of us needing to understand
what the other one is thinking
out here in no man's land.
