A Father's Vigil

Sleep well, my Son
Through the long day.
Fear not the bright light…
I stand guard by your side.
They came today….
Loved ones and friends,
Crying, “Here lies one
Who was noble and brave
Who caused no grief…”
And left me weeping at your grave.

Sleep well, my Son
Through the dark night
Fear not the fading light…
I stand vigil by your side.
They came today …
The creatures of the night,
I cried, “ Here lies one
Who is innocent and alone
Who caused no pain…”.
And they left me to grieve at your tombstone.

Sleep well, my Son
For, when you wake
Fear not the strange light….
I shall hasten to your side.
We will walk together
Through the eternal light.
Angels will cry,” Come hither,
We heard your cries.
Suffer no more….”
And we will walk together through the gates of paradise.

This poem is dedicated to my sister and brother-in- law who lost their son. He came into this world fighting for his life and passed away precious minutes after his birth.

I should absolutely hate you after reading this... imagine, a grown man in a public library with tears rolling down his face...
The problem is that this is just too beautifully done, and too heartfelt, and well written...
Now, I'm off to find more of your writing, Sir.

We see the light of those
Who find the world has passed them by
Too late to save a dream from growing cold...

Paul, Suthern, Koaru, James & scorpio,
Thank you all for your comments.

Ringo,
I apologise if it made you cry especially in a library ...rest assured all grown men cry though most do it in private...
Thank you for taking the time to read my poem and glad you liked it
