Lion-Heart

We remember well the day you were born
In the tranquil peace of an early morn
So tender of limb and so fair of face
A wondrous gift of God’s grace
So precious and dear to our heart
Our gentle lamb with a lion’s heart.

But then one day you said goodbye
“Mother dear, please do not cry…
Dear father, help her understand
The call for duty is near at hand;
For God and country I must part”,
Said our gentle lamb with the lion’s heart.

We knew not if it was two months or more
They came with bowed heads at our door
“In the heat of battle as bullets flew wild
He gave his life for an innocent child.
We salute this soldier for his part
We honor the lamb named Lion-Heart”.

We gazed upon our lamb, marred
Bullet ridden and battle scarred.
And amidst the solemn wail of pipes
They wrapped your body in stars and stripes
Singing, “His cause was just …he did his part
This noble lamb with the lion’s heart”.

So on that day we said our goodbyes
With grieving hearts and tearful eyes
Oh! Speak not of pride and honor won
And of God and country and duty done….
For gone is the hope of a new life to start
For our gentle lamb with the lion’s heart.

A most honorable poem
for such a young man.

Thank you for sharing, Anwaar.

Anwaar, though this is very sad, it is a very
beautiful and excellently written poem. Thank
you for sharing it with us.

the saddness is overwhelming in this.

If art is still inside, I feel it

Nice writing...only those that have lost a loved one know the true depths of the love they shared and the love they lose...my heart goes out to them...for the burden they must endure...James
