Charlie does not dance any more,
though his bones still know the way to move
no one's ever heard him say a reason;
it's a quirk like sitting with his back
up against a wall in public places,
the way he'll pause two heart's beat
half way out a building door,
or disappear within a crowd
like he's allowed his body just to melt,
the way he checks his 3 or 9 exiting a car
with eyes that seem to look too far away,
the way he walks close to a building
like he's always seeking shelter
from the rain, from living in the open;
he talks but it's never very loud
and even then it's just
the least of what he has to say.
No one's ever asked him why,
no one seems to notice
they're too busy with themselves,
not that he'd tell them anyway.
Charlie's just a little strange that way.

icebox...I would ask why, and have.  This is a very vivid portrait that evokes a feeling of sadness in me.  Easy to walk by, but yet...

Great write, is Charlie a real guy?
Either way I loved this.

Yes...Charlie's a real guy...
just as is Tom, Fred, Harry, John....

ice...

you did this very well.  I'm one of those strange folk - who try to see the good in all things?  Sometimes we are where we are because we put ourselves there...some would call that stubborn pride....

and sometimes we get ourselves out of where we are...because we don't want to be there anymore.

Ah well...just talk here...

maybe I need to go do what you did...

write about it.

Excellent write..left me feeling sorry for the guy.
After the years in the pen...
who knows what he has been through or seen...
Very well done...wonderful imagery.

Martie ~ I appreciate your questions.  I know I do not answer them well.  I actually wrote this in part because of your questions.  The point of a life lived that way is to be ignored.  It is safety.

Jason Lyle ~ *smile* I am glad you enjoyed this.  Thank you for telling me.

Sunshine ~ Yes, they are all real.  Yes, there is choice involved, but often the choices are limited by reality.  Thank you for your thoughts.

Enchantress ~ To pass unknown in the world is both bitter and sweet.  Thank you for your comments.

Hmmm, it would seem that I'm a little "strange that way" as well...

A choice? Yes

Charlie, strange? Nah, he just figures that if he doesn't bring attention to himself he can't be hurt or disappointed...I know Charlie.

Icy, you never disappoint.

wranx ~ There is ALWAYS choice. *smile*

passing shadows ~ Ahhh...I sometimes think you would tempt Aqualung with your pixie grin! *laugh*

Susan Caldwell ~ Well, see...now you don't have to spring for dinner. You know all there is to know about the hammer shaped chromosome side of human gender.  *grin*
