Through night’s vastness
known as midsummer’s sky,
a comet flew like a skipping rock
across a placid pond,
breaking the serenity
of a trillion anchored stars,
leaving a trail of rippled trace,
in, but not in night’s firmament,
as if someone had scratched
the glass of a photograph
not marring, but magnifying
the beauty therein.
With eyes transfixed in wait
for rebirth of comet’s blaze,
came Luna’s crawl,
floating across midsummer sky
like a mother duck asleep
on the water as her ducklings
surround her in bubbling effervescence,
in, but not in night’s firmament,
as if a radiant gem were to
drift across a photograph.
A slivered moon and shooting star,
both in, and not in heaven’s high,
a part, and not a part of the splendor
of midsummer’s sky.

"Through night’s vastness

One of the best poetic openings I can recall!

Excellent.  Thank you for sharing it.

...and if you blink...
it's gone.

Excellent imagery...

This poem was,
and was not,
no, it was,
a piece of
p-e-r-f-e-c-t-i-o-n!

This is pure art:
"Through night’s vastness
known as midsummer’s sky,
a comet flew like a skipping rock
across a placid pond,
breaking the serenity
of a trillion anchored stars,
while leaving a trail of rippled trace"
but actually I loved the entire write and am saving it, thank you.
