I am a chimera,
woven from reality's
illusions braided
from unnatural acts
of mystical release;
I walk among the crowds
of sleepy minds,
seeing souls imprisoned
in their cloudy cells
with banded doors,
bars hand wrought
from ego heated over time
on fires stoked with charcoal
made of leavings trimmed
from culture's imposed
dogmatic lies.
I realized when I was young
that to survive
I had to hold my tongue
and let the talking monkeys
have their say.
I am only one;
there is no way
for me,
alone,
to make what has to be
get done.
Do you know how hard it is
to watch,
to smile,
silently to nod?
It is like staring at a child
as it reaches in the fire
to retrieve a favorite toy
that flames already have destroyed.

Hiding in plain sight
is frightening at times,
and I am only safe
because what should have been,
perceptions,
catalytic understandings,
the fleeting moments
of intuitive epiphanous clarity,
illuminated edges
on the real design,
are dismissed
as aberrations
when events step lightly,
farther out beyond
the walls which keep
the masses sense of safety
fed
upon denial,
and confined.

I keep a pet.
They say it's good
to keep a pet;
mine is a set of obligations,
abstracts,
built of  understandings
I've animated over time,
and kept alive
by feeding it
on scraps collected
with my eyes.
Perhaps if I was younger,
stronger,
more of whatever it may be
that I've allowed to fade
into domesticity,
perhaps...
but I doubt
I'll know
before my last option
dies,
though I do know now
that I can not ever
let loose my pet
to play outside.

Wow. Oh, well, from one of the chattering chimps: Well done.

I get a little frustrated from time to time.  Don't take it personally, OK?  *smile*

Thank you for reading my poem and for taking the time to comment.

Total glee in recognition.

"Hiding in plain sight
is frightening at times"

Sometimes the best camouflage is the color RED.

Awesome revelations here, m'friend.

and this?

"though I do know now
that I can not ever
let loose my pet
to play outside."

yeah. but you kinda just DID.

Iceman, maybe we all should learn from this poem....to not let our "pet" loose to play outside. Sometimes silence is best, isn't it?

It pains me to read the sharp edges of this, my friend.

serenity blaze ~ Thought you might recognize this creature. Red?  Hmmm...gee and I'm a "winter" for my colors. *grin*

garysgirl ~ Yeah, maybe I should not have let this one out?

Martie ~ Oh, I did not meant to cause you pain.  I apologize for that.  I appreciate your time and your input, and especially your friendship.

I do know:

Do you know how hard it is
to watch,
to smile,
silently to nod?

Midnitesun ~ Oh be careful with that advice.  It is a pet that has all its teeth and claws intact! ...and it is definitely devoid of conscience.   *smile*

passing shadows ~ Thank you for your kind words.

littlewing ~ It is clear in your work that you do know.  I wish you the peace I have never found.
