My Holocaust

I stand before these silent walls
Head bowed in abject shame
And hold myself beneath contempt
For my love’s fate I am to blame.

Upon our arms a branded star
Once bespoke of people, soon lost
To the scourge of mass genocide
And the onset of a holocaust.

For was it long ago or yesterday
We fled the clutches of tyranny
Hunted we were like wild game
Then caged in the “ghetto” of inequity.

A loud knock upon the door
Bred fear and terror in our heart;
The day of reckoning was near at hand
And soon we would have to part.

Herded with countless suffering souls
Bound for a place I knew not where
Her words still haunt me as she left,
“Dear, save yourself …take care.”

I carried her words to the “camps”
And found a way to thrive
By sending those of my own kind
To their deaths, so I could survive.

“As you sow, so shall you reap”
So goes the wise adage,
For one day my love stood before me
As I trembled in agonized rage.

And she gazed at me with sunken eyes
As if her will was all but gone,
Then she urged gently, “It’s okay love,
Lead me to my death … go on.”

These walls stand in silent tribute
To her tortured soul, long gone
But alas!  within my own mind
My “Auschwitz” lingers on … and on.

To begin, I'd like to welcome you to Passions. This is a wonderful poetry site, with many different styles of writing to enjoy.
I felt such a chill reading this. I lived on a kibbutz in Israel for a year, and worked side-by-side with a few survivors of the camps. Some of the stories I heard were similar to this, and they always made me cry.
If this is your personal experience, I am so sorry. You had to make a survival decision that no one should ever have to make, and you've paid consequences. No one can judge you harshly for your decision, and hopefully, you haven't judge yourself either.
I believe your loved ones understood.

A chilling and emotional first write, but one that must be written so as to always be remembered.

Welcome to Passions. This wonderful site is filled with remarkable writers and fantastically friendly and loving people. I believe you will be most happy here.

NewEnglandlazurlu,
Thank you for reading my poem...yes it is something that should always be remembered. Though the above experience is not my own and I am not jewish, the holocaust is very much about man's inhumanity towards mankind...a tragic chapter in our history !!!

Yes Anwaar,
you haven't written about a very painful part of history, and very, very well, too. You are a very talented poet and I think you're going to fit right in here at Passions amongst this wonderful "Family of Friends". Welcome to our home.
Hugs

Wow. This poem blew me away.
It is a wonderful piece of work.
It made me cry. It reminded me of the famous Annliese Marie Frank.
keep on posting because I love to read and respond to more of your work.

welcome. You'll meet a lot of interesting people. Some are kind, some romantic...some a little..dark. Your poem was great and gave me the full blown "shivers"
