Long ago I broke
the spell of the shepperds
I couldn't abide being
another sheep in the flock
the blind without question
Even Jesus had the sense to ask
Why have you forsaken me?

The Church says that the Earth is flat, but I know that it is round. For I have seen the shadow on the moon and I have more faith in the Shadow than in the Church.

~Ferdinand Magellan

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.

~Galileo Galilei

When are we human beings gonna have a meeting? We took this god thing and ran to the god damn end of the earth with it.

Why have you forsaken me?

I always questioned this myself and glad you brought it up . . .

If Jesus knew his destiny why would he have uttered such a phrase?
To his own Father.

trying to leave my personal views out of this . . . but personally I think you said it all right there . . .

loved this Raph . . .
always questioning . . . is a good thing

Well to be fair Sue the line doesn't show up in all of the gospels which is surprising considering how usually in tune they are with eacother..hahahahaha oh I slay me
But again the whole point is asking questions which few will.

Jesus was the perfect human being and the perfect God. In His pain on the cross he spoke as the perfect human being.
This is an opinion of course. I question too. Even though I believe.
We all search ...
Freedom of thought is a wonderful gift.
And trying to unveil the mysteries is an act of faith.

I believe that Jesus said "why have you forsaken me" because even though he is the son of God he took on the body, soul, and spirit of an earthly man, that could feel the same pain as us...so of course he would respond to pain as a man would...and cry out "God, why have you forsaken me."
Reminded me of a song...
"I've never been spit upon, ridiculed, pierced in my side, life's no bed of roses but I'm glad to be alive, I've got a long, long way to go, to be like the Lord...James

Thanks Dix!

Margherita the problem i have with catholicism is the model of 'perfection' I can't empathize with perfection or waste my life trying to achieve perfection. That's where i think catholicism and christiant fail in guilttrips and supposed perfection
Abbracci tu sai che io ti respeto e l'opinioni tua ma questa e l'opinone mei

Agreed james it's one of the few times one can seriously identify with jesus as a human , the other being his rage at the moneylenders. Besides i find the historical jesus much more interesting than the biblical

Aenimal...an excellent write as always.  Here is my belief:  There is a big time difference between faith and religion.  I believe God gave us the greatest gift of free will...we are supposed to use in our faith so that we may develop our own personal relationship with Him.  So, I read the word, interpreting it my own way...then I pray in my own way.

Seems I always have a lengthy response for you.  You make me think...and (although some beg to differ) I think it is a good thing.

Smiling at you!

True Mish but the reasons you may admire him may be linked to the original fiction whereas the historical image could p* off alot of people..Oh you know better than to start me up on religion so i'll shut up now grins

Raph steps back from the free will debate lol I agree patricia very well said, i think people lose site of the spirituality to dogma

Ah Jason knew you would grins thanks bud

For such a short poem, this is terribly effective. Actually, I think the short ones can say the most. Of course, I'm one of the sheep, and I'm glad I have a shepherd. I learned a long time ago that I'd be lost without Him.

enlighten me on this line not showing up in all the gospels .. . I know it is twisted around a bit and many see it in a different light - what he meant by it - I know what he meant by it . . . at least I like to think I do . . .

Sue the gospels, despite the claim that those of Matthew Mark and Luke are synoptic(seeing eye to eye), differ from eachother on main events in the history. Also, as is the case with the fourth gospel John, sometimes contain stories not included in the other three. But let me get back to the quote before I spiral into something else.

In the example I mentioned Jesus is said to cry on the cross. "My God, My God, why Hast thou forsaken me?" but this quotation only appears in Matthew and Mark. Luke's version has Jesus saying 'Father into thy hands I commit my spirit' while John's has him dying quietly.

And because you know I wouldn't shut up..
Scholars believe John is actually the most historically accurate of the books, it is also more mystic and deals quite extensively with the latter days of Jesus leading up to the crucifiction. John's gospel skips past the birth of jesus but contains the stories of Lazerus and of the wedding where the others do not. It's these stories that scholars believe offer more insight into the man and also of his inner circle which suggests the book was written by someone in the know, escaping the Romanization the others suffer from. I'm going to shut up now.

Thanks Jennis very Kind of you to say

Thanks Raph:

I will look into this more . .  I didnt realize there was such a difference . . .
but why only John?
I dont understand why the others followed
suit and he did not  . . .
*opening can of worms*
