in the shadows

My grandfather taught me to play poker.
Each summer from June to September
we played afternoons before dinner
and all day long when it rained;

he told me the memory of people,
their habits
the look in their eyes,
could cover my bet
when fate dealt me cards that were cold.

He promised it wasn't a game;
he once said that games
were for children
and losers who never grew up,
though I was nine at the time
I'd learned the presence of mind
to be still and study his eyes.

The ability to learn by watching can be a life long aid in the "game" of life.  A poignant piece...enjoyed!

I like this one.I learned to play with family and there's no use bluffing with them. They know me too well.
