The Fork

~A wedding gift~
came the soft sigh of words,
as I began emptying the treasures
from my life, fingering the edges
still sharp with the memory.

A dinner together
celebrating 30 years,
the air cool, despite it being
an August evening.

Silence coming from across the table
and me, not knowing the pressure building
within him, the need to say
what the moment hinted.

Palming it, over and over
I noticed the wear, and as I held it taut,
it began to bend from my will,
as I thought about the depression
anxiety and emotional loss
from that evening on.

Tears don't show on the outside, anymore.
At least not when he appears.
But the aching of loneliness
rises every time he turns his back on me.

This fork, just one more reminder
of him, now altered from my touch
as was that last evening when
he chose another course
leaving me alone before dessert.

M (had a yard sale this weekend...)

And so it becomes the tale of 3 forks!
Enjoyed the yard sale inspiration Maureen...

very interesting, a different view of the
'fork'
sad, but maybe the tines were not strong enough to hold up all the emotions

Sometimes I wish we could have a memory-sale, and sell off the ones that still hurt.
hugs.
