the sun retracted,
and the unblinded water shone true blue again,
like a giant bucket of turquoise jello,
shake, rattle and roll; making me dizzy as i breathe its life into my soul,
and a sea of  marble colored eyes now filled the darkening sky,
and baseball fans in bleacher seats watched Willie Mays play his final days at Shea
Fast forward now
as we wait for the 4ths spectaclar nighttime show,
and my ears fill with different tongues, in anticipation
and the long distance boats out past a lifeguards domain
divide with lights, the ocean from the sky,
and silver birds fly by, fly by.......
off till morning, with their secret handshake, they're off
they lose me again tonight, on flight,
and coney island is paradise
to a girl who never knew an oceanliner from a inner tube,
as long as life and fate
blessed her geographically within reach of the piscean delight,
and the UN assembles on the beach on a jersey shore today,
in a kaleiodoscope, there are rainbowed bodies on parade,
in living color and slices of past and future weld me to the here and now,
and the flowered saris swinging
off the hips of soft bellied indian oldladies,
and salsa playing along borriquan blankets smelling like mangoes,
and radios blast with KTU music, the beat of New York,New York shaking its butt,
and me the pale gringo, looking out
into nothing and everything, waiting for a sky story to write on black with white,
and litttle girls becoming women under the boardwalk at age l6,
and the ocean stunk with fish, and he asks me how i can stand it........
and i tell him that that's the smell of perfumed holywater
that only a queens or brooklynboy would ever know and love,
and someone call the bikini police, this ocean view is becoming frightful,
and i remember the boy in the projects, the church bells cried when he died....
swimming by the bay of silvergulls, in unchartered waters,
as he took my illusions of cottoncandyskies for a ride....
on the raft he sailed, silly-eyed adventurer who took his own boyhood dreams
out to sea, and he had to die
i can now surmise it must have been his untimely time.....
and he became a black and beautiful diamond, his smile still calls to me some white on white nights
in the forever sky,
haunting me even now, like an unsolved news headline, deep within the childhood mind............
and i know i heard talk of a color line for the very first time, that summer then,
and the assorted flavors of neightbors dotting the project benches
like greengrass laden with multicolored flowers, and ooohhhhhhh the summernights, and beatle songs always the beatles played alongside any memories -
both the savored and best forgotten ones......
and its all fused, a bit muddled and confused ,
this giant jumble of history, mystery and bliss,
and i waited each night to walk the boardwalk when dad was still l0 feet tall,
and the only man i would ever love, thru these 12 year old eyes,
and on august nights he swam his job and fiancial woes away...............
and bought me and the skinny wallflower little sis castleshaped custard cones,
along with sweet dreams tossed between some of the ungraspable but sadder childhood memories,
and somewhere between then and now,
when i am faced heart to heart with the ocean pulse,
when i look out into nothing and everything all at once,
.....i dont have to wonder if i've ever been loved

* thanks for hanging in there *

Sigh! I knew it was worth reading through ... dear Michele, your considerations on a firework day are remarkable.
... and the piece with your father, just made me cry!
You know what you write about .... that's what makes it an outstanding touching write.
Love and hugs. Margherita

Michele, don't worry about the length of this amazing write...it didn't seem long at all because you took your readers right there where it was all happening. Very good writing.

Terrific insight. It brought me back to where I grew up. I think we shared a castle shaped cone on one summers day and didnt even know it. Your descriptions really have memories flooding back. Way to go Michele.
