I threw their theories
to the lake to watch
if they would sink or swim
realizing that wisdom
superseded knowledge

In the exchange
of philosophy for life
the time had come
to put down their words
and live my own

"With all your wisdom, get UNDERSTANDING."

(don't quiz me on the book, chapter & verse--grin...with all my understanding? I have not much wisdom.)

Put down the words, but keep them close.
For they are still a manual of sorts. something to use when your path becomes occluded.

Nice one raff!

Yes, we should live as we speak--but it is prudent to keep one's ears open to the wisdom that is spoken by others...

Catalytic thoughts - well put, Sir.

We build upon the wisdom and the foolishness of the past. In the same way, new civilizations build upon the bones and rubble of the past.   No matter how profound the philosophies and concepts are when first expressed (or however silly), the thoughts and words of another pass into literature with the author's death.  Though the ideas may still have meaning to the living, some of the energy - an intangible, is lost when the originator's life is over.  Sometimes too the ideas themselves die; that is the most fortunate characteristic of social fads.  In the end, we create our own universe of meaning and opportunistically can use anything picked up along the way.

You went and made me think again, and here I had expected just to spend tonight reading poetry and looking out the window over my monitor's shoulder; I can see my neighbors stumbling drunkenly about as they apparently try to set fire to themselves with tiny explosives and sparkling rockets.  Thank you.

I think I should add that this is not a reference to the bible though you may as well lop it in with the other volumes on the shelf that have shaped or corroded my being.

Thanks K

Ed they're all there, dusted from time to time to gauge where I'm coming from and where I may be going

Of course Linda but you must remember that wisdom is learned not imparted

Ice I agree, I've always loved a quote from Bruce Lee in his Tao of Jeet Kune Do. Something to the effect that we should take only what we need from books and throw the rest away..damn the proper quote sounds muuuuuch better but I'm far too lazy to look it up, my books are upstairs ..grin

I like what you have to say. Philosophy is basically the opinions of others and ways to trick other people into seeing it "their way" so wisdom would be seeing past all of that. Nice write!

and it is wise to follow what mother nature gave us, instinct..that does not need a philosphical mind of dialectic dissertations to be proven adequate in many a case...a wise poem Raph..
at the same time I quite admired the early Greek philosphers from which the basis of modern stuff is all made, some of the classical stuff like from Kant, Schopenhauer, Spinoza and the modern stuff, so not all philosophy is bunk in my opinion. Maybe this is where I picked up some of my pessimism of what we are told to learn as opposed to teaching.
Unlike Into the Flames, I don't think philosophers tricked people into seeing things their way as opposed to giving us a chance to see that we could all be reflective about what we do and find a purpose for living.
ourselves.

Flames I don't think they set out to trick people with philosophy, that's religion. ahem..I think Philosophy is fantastic but getting lost in can destroy a person

Aye H Aye..

No I agree Martin, philosophy is a wonderful stepping stone in human development and evolution of the mind. It's getting lost in them in theories in books that can also stunt that development. One should step back from time to time

such was what the ancient Greeks intended, they were more concerned with discussion forums than publications of books I think..it's the interpretations that others give on top of what original premises were that can corrupt our thoughts...any way we are still free to examine things with a big grain of salt.

Raph:

have volumes of my own indeed . . .

I always believed that by reading something and taking even a snippet of it and applying that to your life - where and when you need it - serves its purpose.  To live by only one way or word or book, would truly quell the beautiful spirit alive inside all of us, especially yours.  I too, have lived far too long under the thumb of ???? I cant even really answer that.  All I do know is that today, this spoke to me like you will never realize and I thank you.  Kind of like an explorer at the helm, future and destination outlined, yet unknown.  Good for you . . . makes me proud, but then again - you always do

As the man once sang about experience . . .

*cheers*  here's hoping they sunk
always . . .

A brilliant write, Raph...okay, I have a new favourite now.
I'm slowly starting to learn this, although I find that wisdom is all too sobering and unkind sometimes, then again, it's better than a regurgitated knowledge taught to everyone...
good for you for realizing and this poem gets a DAMN!

I truly enjoyed this read as it made me think; something I believe at times we do far too little of (although at present, I may be doing too much of it.. lol)..

very, very seriously, a great write.

Yes -- knowledge versus wisdom, fact versus truth.....so easy to confuse one with the other, and so damaging to each!

Well said, my friend.

Yes, you should live by your own words; however, do not let your philosophies cast you in stone.  I know this man whom I adore, but he is hung up on his own philosophy and is unwilling to let another's word touch his life.  In my discussions with him, I have seen moments of revelation with something I had said.  I truly thought I effected some changed for him.  Because of some issues (mainly my issues) I had not seen him for a couple of months.  We got together a couple of weeks ago and it seems he still clings to those same philosophies, going back to his rudimentary ideas, never willing to accept another's point of view.

So, yes live by your words...but don't forget that we are here to help each other through this journey and others may just have something worthy to say.

I don't mean to preach, Aenimal.  This is just my humble opinion.  And I do believe it is important not to live as a sheep, following blindly.  I thoughtfully consider others' words and see if I can perhaps learn a new way.

This is an excellent piece of writing...very thought provoking as you can see by the lengthy reply.  I am better for having reading it.

Thanks,
Patricia

nice - sounds like you learned one of my secrets

I take what I need or want & leave the rest
you can always go back if you forgot something
but only you can decide what should go in your cart
