The sun rose as it always does
like a ball of fire in the sky
as temperatures peaked first thing in the morning.
I wanted to get as faraway and escape the dry heat in a hurry.
So I threw in a towel and a new book to read,
packed a couple cold ones into the cooler
along with some of my favorite things
and wound my way through the canyon, heading straight for the beach.

The traffic was backed up for the summer holiday
but I paid no mind,
I knew there would be a place in the sand left for me.
I was prepared for the crowds and planned to pay for parking
as it turned out, luck was on my side
a car was going as I was coming
so I backed myself up into a tight spot for free.

I wish you could have been there
it was the kind of day that defines my paradise.
The breeze blew offshore in a gentle sway
not a single cloud in the sky
seagulls graced the day,
while keeping one eye open for any leftovers.
The water shimmered liked diamonds
gently rolling over the bluest waves.
A day that brings families together
grilling hot dogs and hamburgers
and homemade potato salad.
But as it happens, like always, my troops had other plans
which is ok, I am used to being alone
some days I even prefer it that way.

I did my share of people watching
as all walks of life passed me by.
I observed small children building sandcastles on their dreams.
Young lovers sporting their hard bodies
reminding me of other days gone by
meanwhile my book was getting good.

But what enhanced the day, were all the umbrellas
decorating the sandy beach as far as the eye could see.
Silently I gave thanks for our freedom
that we as Americans are so blessed to have.
While I said my prayers for the young men and women so far away
who are fighting the battle to preserve our independence on this day.

So it only seems fitting to dedicate this poem to every human being
who has gone off to war, and to those who never came back.

Happy Day Everyone~

I think I'm losing my form,
(what little I had)
but it was the perfect day
and I wrote it down in a hurry
so I wouldn't forget.

There's so much to be thankful for..
and I thank you dear wranx~

Well now, sounds like you had a wonderful 4th of July and very much like the one I had to tell you the truth.  The only thing wrong with it was you and I were not sharing an umbrella together, but we will, we will!

Oh Lori, that sounds like a wonderful day at the beach. I love the beach, don't you?
