Son let me tell you
of the trains of people and their culture
of the wounded deer and the circled vulture
let me remind you
of the buffalo that had once roamed free
the faces carved from majestic Douglas trees

Let me tell you
what our people hold true
you are the future of my proud race
vultures eat carrion...when life showns no trace
trains of people long displaced the buffalo
we used to hunt...then cultivation followed
be aware of the white man and his ways
he came to help and now he stays..

When he forced us off the land we hunted
we were directed to cultivated land salted...
with the bones of the buffalo massacred by their hands,
nothing would grow from the earth where we stand.
To remove us from the depression that then followed,
he sent us a strange religion we're forced to swallow

Make sure before you give up any more of our forefathers' land,
find out from past experience where your future will stand.

Funny how we north american peacekeepers and fighters of justice are nations built on the eridication, exploitation and the oppression of native peoples a practice that remains today. They came to stay indeed, I think today they'd call it a police action

Such an awful contradiction wouldn't you say so Raph?...and yet there is so much to learn from Native American ways...like herbal cures
which they knew about centuries before everything had to be prescribed.

Nations built on contradictions and thriving on them still yes. And yes there's alot to learn from any culture who could survive in such extremes with as little as they did. I mean I can barely survive a canadian winter imagine..

Granted but I wouldn't say with as little..that is probably what we see by comparison, they managed with what they had and weren't out to exploit their resources the way we have, where everything has to be turned into some money making machine...if not it gets wiped out or absorbed.

History is always involved with future, we can learn from it, or close our eyes for it, but you can never erase it.

Interesting...and the Chinese were forced to move into the future with the invention of gunpowder and guns...progress is not always kind to those that oppose it...and mankind not so nice to those they can dominate...James

The conquerors and the conquered; the history of mankind.  Every civilization has to look back at the path to its existence.
Fine write, enjoyed.

Charisma,

one should never close ones eyes..but of course we are alos bombarded with news from all over...in question is our reaction time

James,

yes the dominator is most often heartless and thankless... and I wanted to write a poem on a basically overlooked phenomenon..learning to thank those whose who we've displaced and dominated
for so long....can't make ammends for the heartlessness

Tim

That includes this civilization we're in the midst of carving...I think most people are oblivious to the fact that it's not happening form the outside...we are the builders the doers and sadly the undoers.
