Then was a time when we could talk
among the crowded histories making up the two of us,
our hearts and minds
would walk around each other's words and life
holding thoughts as lovers on a sunny day in spring;

it was a time before the tendrils of the world,
feeding on our egos and our fears,
entwined and tangled steps
our minds and our emotions once easily controlled.

Now is a time when I can not reach you,
you've withdrawn so deeply into pain,
depression's bitter anodyne,
each time I think I've found some guidepost
leading to the trails threading through the wastelands
in my dreams I fail along the way,
feeling fevered, weak and frail,
ending empty handed back where I began;
yet I carry in my heart the simple mindless hope
that somewhere in your fog you still hold
the old unraveled threads of your desire.

Always you've been free.
We hooked no weights no chains to one another,
no thankless blankets cloying with emotion
under which all love can smother;
so I climb each night the highest point
among the tallest trees of conscious memory,
to scan the bleak horizons of my mind for any sign
that someway you will return to me.

Then once again exhausted, turning to retire
for rest, to recharge, perhaps even to sleep,
along any one of many shoulders on dreams' dismal highways,
I fold and tuck away to keep inside my heart the hope,
the fading memories of desire.

I use the word often in my replies to you for lack of a better one. But Brilliant always come to mind. Your words strike deep into this boy ice

I know personally just what you are describing, and it's sad, a deep understanding ache in me when I read this

You have touched a similar chord in many of your readers--and I am one of them. You are so open and real and giving in your writing.
A sharp pencil--and a sharp mind...

Amazing, isn't it? That something can be SO fine it flows like mercury to where it will.

"Now is a time when I can not reach you,

This is exactly how and why my marriage ended after 19 yrs.  The pain and bitterness swallowed anything else there ever was, and I was left with nothing but pain and contempt for the person that caused it. Ohhhh...you hit a nerve with this one....brilliantly done..

Hugs to you, friend. You always put your heart out into plain view, with words that nearly could have bled themselves onto the page. But you are careful to NOT draw additional blood from the reader, although you do make the heart twinge in understanding, and perhaps, recognition.

Beautiful. Fold it small and tuck it tight within your heart.

this piece struck so many chords it could have played a symphonic epiphany in my heart.
