Never close enough

The expression on his face when he opened the old wooden door,
was like none that I had witnessed in my thirty years before.

The look was that of surprise, but kinna like he knew,
that you would call on him,
before his time was through.

You introduced me as your wife,
then he held out his hand.

My fingers felt the golden ring,
his twenty-year wedding band.

The three of us sat down and talked,
of times that were in the past.

Each time I looked into his eyes,
I wondered was this conversation his last.

The two of you laughed & reminisced about things
that ya'll had done,
Twenty years of mischeif, and more than that of fun.

I stood from my seat, and walked toward the golden frame,
which held photos of his family, he told me all their names.

A family of four, but soon to be of three.
My heart was breaking inside..."Dear God, how can this be?"

He explained his bout with the sickness, his eyes were clear and bright.
He wasn't afraid to live, he was still in for the fight.

I realized as I heard him talk, that I had been so selfish at times,
He was fighting death, and I worried of dollars and dimes.

Our visit lasted three hours, my how the hours flew,
you were afraid to go...this I think he knew.

I learned many lessons in that small wooden house that day,
I learned to love my life, no matter the rules of play.

In this man I could see a father, a husband and a brother, a friend to you, a friend to me, and a inspiration like no other.

A lovely, bittersweet poem. Life is certainly worth living, and may we learn from this lesson to live life like he did: "He wasn't afraid to live, he was still in for the fight."

Blessings,

El Campeador

He wasn't afraid to live, he was still in for the fight.

This...explains so much.  To not be afraid to LIVE...tells of his trust, and love, in Him.

Excellent!

Isn't it amazing how we always find someone
else who has life much worse than we do?
And...we find a person who is so filled
with courage and desire...truly,  as you
said..and inspiration.

Thank you for sharing this poem,  and I do
believe you have done well for this friend
of your's.
